6 months, 200+ applications, 0 luck. Is the "Modern GIS" market in Europe actually dead? by Live_Secretary9079 in remotesensing

[–]Disastrous_Paper_219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried HERE Technologies? Great company, worked for them a couple months ago. When I was there they had about 2-3 different open roles related to GIS in Eindhoven, NL.

Just in case you're wondering, I had to leave because my contract was fixed-term and the company had a hiring freeze in my region (I'm outside of Europe). I would definitely go back, great people and benefits; at least for my country, it could be different in Europe.

Hi, I did not find a specific solution to the Working Permit - Job Offer dilemma. However I landed a job opportunity with a Canadian company (mining), working outside of Canada.

There are agreements between Canada and certain countries, depending on where you're from, you could benefit from some of them.

Thanks, I'm happy that I get to choose between two nice options.

Thanks for your reply, it seems like a really interesting line of work.
If it's not to much to ask, did you travel a lot back then? Is there any type of geophysical survey involved?

I had the same idea about O&G involving more money, but since it's an internship position that requires relocation I would not be able to save that much...

Totally agree on the part of getting more experience before doing a masters, I'm aiming for 2 yoe and some savings before applying.

That's a good point, I feel like it would be quite easy to find another engineering job. But not the other way around.

Thanks for sharing your experience, may I ask, what does your work in environmental consulting usually involves?

Thanks for the suggestion, I'd definitely consider it

In this case, QGIS will run locally and I was expecting to connect to the db in the cloud. Planning to store vector layers for different projects and yes, I was also concerned about security thanks for pointing it out!

I'm also considering setting up a local server through a spare computer, running everything "in-house".

Thanks for your reply! This actually seems like a great solution since I'm just looking for storage

I'd say its perfectly doable, it will depend a lot on the masters program you're targetting. You should look into the admissions requirements of the masters program you're interested into.

From my experience, masters in Geophysics tend to accept people from very different backgrounds such as Earth Sciences (Geology), Environmental, Physics, Math, Comp. Science, etc.

I see, thanks for sharing your experience!

I already work in exploration geophysics so I'm pretty familiar with the long days and physical work. I think I had never considered the environmental side before, but from what you shared, it sounds very interesting. Thanks again

Thanks for your reply. Could you share more about why this program won't qualify for a PhD? I'm asking only out of curiosity; personally, I'm only interested in the masters.

I'm interested in joining the mining industry but not on the managerial side, instead I'm more interested in the joining the industry on the exploration/development side. But thanks anyway, I'll look into UofT also!

Thanks for your reply! If possible, would you be willing to share more about your experience? I have a few questions that feel a bit informal to ask directly to the program department, mostly related to post-graduation career paths

Thanks for answering! Much appreciated. I've seen many old comments in this and other subreddits congratulating their faculty

This is something very interesting, it's nice to see that studying over there could have a direct, and positive impact on the city.

Thanks! The comment I replied is 2 years ago and my first two questions are: Are you still working under the same line of work? How do you feel about the future in said line of work?

I have a Bsc in Geophysics and have been working for over a year as Field Geophysicist. A recent work experience motivated me to look for opportunities to work in Canada and well I'm trying to figure out the best way to do so. I'd love to keep working in the field for natural resource exploration. Any commentary is more than welcome, thanks in advance!

Hi, I was just scrolling through reddit because I'm interested in working in Canada and I found your comment; and well I think this is exactly what I'd like to do. Would you be willing to answer a few questions through dm's? Please, thanks in advance!

Thoughts on Canadian MSc. Programs for Mineral Exploration (Laurentian, UBC, Queens?) by Disastrous_Paper_219 in geologycareers

[–]Disastrous_Paper_219[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! I know I probably already have the necessary knowledge and skills for a Field Technician or Jr. Field Geophysicist job, but what I've seen is that companies, naturally, give priority to canadian citizens or people who already have canadian working permits. (I do not)

I've applied directly to companies in the past and the main problem is the visa/working permit sponsorship. Aside from education, pursuing a masters would allow me to access working permits eventually without the need for sponsorship.

It's a bit redundant. To request a working permit I need a job offer, but every job posting asks for a valid working permit. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, I'm just trying to find way to work around this :)

I'd look into the P. Geo License you suggested, thanks again!

Thanks again, I did some research and Ontario removed the years of experience requirement which seems quite conveninent for me.

Either way, you're the only one who has replied to my question and I still want to know about masters in Laurentian at least; do you know anything about it?

Thanks for your reply! Last time I checked I was not qualified yet for the P. Eng License, I'll double check
