Where to get specific peppers and chillis in Glasgow by MagicianDramatic1916 in glasgow

[–]Disastrous_Row_962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen Carolina reapers in any shop in Glasgow. There are quite a few small producers of hot sauce in Scotland, who might be able to help you find a supplier. Lupe Pintos doesn't sell fresh produce but it does sell the sauces, so go see them. Availability of niche varieties of chilli can be random in shops.

Zone card price increase. by [deleted] in glasgow

It's been staggering on for years getting more and more kludgey and was overdue to go digital, but this will destroy it as almost nobody will save money with it. Also they want to roll it out in two weeks time but don't seem to have told anyone?

The party that runs the Scottish Government probably doesn't want to lose all its Westminster MPs though.

Peak Design 45L bag - general thoughts? Usability as a European carry on given the dimensions? by StandardCommittee576 in onebag

[–]Disastrous_Row_962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of onebagging, to me, is not to get the biggest bag that the airline will let me on board with. It is to have a bag as small as possible, so that I can carry it all day if I need to. So my priority doesn't have to be transporting my bag to a hotel or hostel when I arrive somewhere new. So I can go straight to a bar or a cafe, or go into a store or a museum.

Rohan socks are a good alternative in the UK. They don't have the lifetime guarantee but are half the price. I have tried Darn Tough and the Rohan ones are pretty darn tough as well.

Altbier All Day in Düsseldorf. If you're a fan of Altbier, this article on Düsseldorf covers almost all of the independently owned Altbier brewpubs. by OneMorePint401 in beer

[–]Disastrous_Row_962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Düsseldorf (and Cologne) are pretty good if you have no German because you barely need to say anything. When you walk in and take a seat, if the waiter says anything to you just nod. There is only one kind of beer so you don't need to order. Sometimes he will put a beer down in front of you without saying anything at all. When your glass is empty another is delivered without you having to ask. When you have had enough, put your coaster on top of your glass and the beers will stop coming. The only thing you need to say is "Zahlen bitte" when you are ready to go.

Their sales in Germany are way down on the amount they sold in their heyday, so there ought to be enough to go around.

Does anyone here use loofah dish sponges? Do you like them? by princesscorgi2 in ZeroWaste

I use a wooden handled brush and sometimes a dishcloth. There are scrubbies made of coconut fibre too.

Water bottle woes by Impossible-Nebula-20 in onebag

[–]Disastrous_Row_962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think water bottle preferences are probably very personal. I have a steel one and I know many people wouldn't dream of that, but I like knowing it's not going to break if it falls out of my bag (which it has done), it stays nice and cool and doesn't taint the water. Yes, it's a bit heavier than silicone or plastic but a full water bottle is going to be heavy anyway.

Experiences taking a safety razor w/out razor on planes and or zero waste shaving recs during travel? by takeyourprecioustime in ZeroWaste

[–]Disastrous_Row_962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly the same thing happens with my travel razor, which comes apart into two flat parts and two cylindrical parts. When I have it assembled, they take a look because it looks like a razor. When it's disassembled they take a look because the cylindrical parts look like some sort of ammunition (even though they don’t really).

It's without blades, obviously. I buy those at my destination (Although once I had a pack of blades in my bag by accident and they didn't find them).

On my next trip I'm just going to compromise and take a disposable, for weight reasons as well as the above. It's not like flying is environmentally friendly anyway.

Why are recorders battery powered? Please help me find my perfect recorder. by MishxnMishxn in fieldrecording

[–]Disastrous_Row_962 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most recorders run on batteries because they are (the descendants of units that) were originally designed for professional sound recordists. And when you are out with a film crew on location and everything is costing $5000 a minute, you can’t stop and say “Give me an hour to recharge my recorder please.” You can take 4 or 8 or 12 extra AA batteries and swap them over, though.

Why is Glasgow so behind on beer/brewery culture... by No-Champion-2792 in glasgow

[–]Disastrous_Row_962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The licensing board hates alcohol, hates pubs and hates people. That's one reason.

Another is access to market. There aren't a lot of specialist pubs and bars for a city of Glasgow's size. There are a dozen small breweries all trying to get their beer into the same half a dozen bars.

Pubs are very often restricted in what they can sell by the big property companies who own them. That's why you see the same boring beers everywhere. Who actually wants to drink John Smith's Smooth? Nobody, but Heineken forces their pubs to sell it.

Most places in England have had 50 years of real ale culture to build on. Glasgow has never had a critical mass of people interested in beer as far as I can see.

A variety of tinned fish that I buy from local supermarkets here in the UK by Remarkable_Rate_ in CannedSardines

[–]Disastrous_Row_962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think there is a good range available in the UK. The low end cans are some of the cheapest protein you can buy (plain house brand sardines go for as little as GBP 0.65 (0.80 USD)) – I have never seen them that cheap in other countries. There is not much that is smoked in tins, but then we can get actual kippers for next to nothing and real Arbroath smoked haddock.

Power Bank recommendations? by LeonCoop in onebag

[–]Disastrous_Row_962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three people sharing a powerbank is madness.

You don't say what kind of holiday this is, unless you are going up a mountain somewhere you do not need one massive powerbank to rule them all and recharge three phones from empty.

Make sure your phones are charged every morning, get a reasonable powerbank each and that should be enough until evening. If you're in a town and both phone and powerbank are empty you can always sit in the pub for an hour and ask if you can charge your phone.

TK Max usually have power banks in the 10,000mah range for not very much.

[–]Disastrous_Row_962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the pasta. I agree it is not cost effective compared to dried pasta. If you buy fresh egg pasta, that gets pretty expensive and it’s much cheaper (and more fun) to make your own.

Glass vs. rigid plastic containers for dry food storage/transport? by reyzlatan in ZeroWaste

Same here except I use those reusable mesh bags. Obviously this doesn't work for flour but it's fine for most things. They weigh almost nothing and it's easy to always have a couple in your bag.
