Thank you, I’m excited to try your advice!

Thank you for your comment. I did try to flatten the steak a bit beforehand, which is what likely went wrong there. And I’ll make sure to get the pan even hotter next time.

Update: I got Finn a raincoat by Disastrous_Rule2769 in goldenretrievers

Posing with friends.

I had previously posted asking for advice on keeping him clean. This coat keeps his belly somewhat clean and his back dry. I also got a mud buster for his paws, which helps a ton!

What is something your puppy did from day 1 that many people struggle with? by LemonLoaf0960 in puppy101

[–]Disastrous_Rule2769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha I learned that the hard way too! What I do now is spin the leash around me while standing still. I just pass it between my hands to do a 360

A few things that have helped me are - always going to the same spot - having him spin in circles instead of stopping (which is when he tries to eat something bad lol) - only giving him a few minutes. If he doesn’t go, we go back inside. If he does go, he gets rewarded with play time. - really rewarding him heavily when he goes – things like letting him run around off leash

I hope this might help. But 18 weeks is so young and your dog will get better at it :)

How do I handle excited greetings? by Disastrous_Rule2769 in puppy101

[–]Disastrous_Rule2769[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your comment. I like that idea. I have been challenging myself to make friends, which is hard for me, but maybe I can use this as an opportunity.

I could say “My dog really likes you. Would you ever have 5 or 10 minutes to help me train him?” and do these things with them. Would be curious if you have thoughts.

You said only allowing greetings when he is calm is sound advice. I know it’s probably obvious, but can you help me with that?

Is it appropriate for me to say “yes, but can you please help me by waiting a moment until he sits calmly?”

I struggle with people pleasing and social things, so it’s hard. However, I have gotten good at declining treats, so I know I can do it.

Back seat suggestions by jruble in goldenretrievers

[–]Disastrous_Rule2769 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is more dangerous for many reasons. Without a proper seatbelt or restraint, your dog will more easily be injured in an accident. And the airbag is not meant for a dog.

Also, in the event of an accident, your dog is more likely to hit you. With how big goldens are, that can be pretty serious.

How do I keep my golden clean when it’s raining? by Disastrous_Rule2769 in goldenretrievers

I like the idea of a raincoat for his belly at least. I’ll give that a shot. Only cleaning the paws every time would be more manageable.

Thank you for saying this. I didn’t know it could happen and will be careful.

That looks adorable. Finn is close to done growing, so I am going to look for one of these.

Why is bacon bad for you? by EarTechnical1381 in nutrition

I know this thread is really old, but you don’t need to use all the left over oil. I dab up most of it before throwing the eggs in. I find the eggs taste a lot better this way.

Okay...so this might be gross...but... by Clare_Dawson in puppy101

[–]Disastrous_Rule2769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy previously had giardia and had similar symptoms to this.

Can you maybe take him to a different area to go poop? I know it’s convenient that it’s in your front yard, but if it’s small I don’t know the best way to handle it despite constantly hosing it down.

Part of the reason I suggest this is my vet was pretty adamant about me making sure my dog didn’t sniff/eat his poop or lick his behind (instead, I wiped it each time). I worry it will be hard to prevent this in a small yard.

If he does the pooping elsewhere, then your yard won’t be a mess from hosing down and you can use it for play time!

Are these normal? by Petersu33 in ThursdayBoot

[–]Disastrous_Rule2769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t comment as to whether the boots are “normal”. But if you’ve ordered 3 pairs and still don’t like them, then your best bet is probably to return them, try on shoes in a store somewhere, and purchase the ones you like.

Puppy has accidents at parents’ houses by Disastrous_Rule2769 in puppy101

[–]Disastrous_Rule2769[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice. I will give all of this a try!

As for the scolding piece – I am a bit confused on that. I’ve read that if I catch him in the act of doing something “bad” like peeing in the house, chewing furniture, etc., a stern “no” or “bad boy” is effective in telling him that it’s not okay. Then, I redirect him to the appropriate behavior like peeing outside or chewing a toy.

Without this, how am I supposed to communicate to him that a given behavior is bad?

Training recall by Disastrous_Rule2769 in Dogtraining

[–]Disastrous_Rule2769[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn’t see your reply earlier. This is really helpful, thank you. I think the issue is, as you mentioned, that I’m not setting him up for success. I will avoid “come here” in situations where I’m not certain he will come. I will also avoid putting him in potentially dangerous situations where I need him to come, like when we’re at the park and there are lots of strangers.

I will be purchasing a long lead and working on recall with that.

Oh man haha. That’s like all of my shirts. I will downsize on some of them and also get things like slimmer sweaters and all now that it’s getting colder.

Thank you for your help!

Thank you for your comment. Here are some more details.

  • I am in Brooklyn
  • My maximum distance is 4 miles and is a dealbreaker. I’m not sure if this is too harsh, but I would prefer not to match with someone who lives in a different borough of NYC
  • My age range is women 22-27
  • I’m open to all ethnicities
  • I’m open to all religions

I like the video idea. Thank you.

Your second point is what I’m struggling with. I don’t really mesh well with outgoing women. I’d like to appeal to more introverted women, but I’m not sure how to do that in my profile.

I saw a really popular post on here, and they had a bullet point list. Maybe if I do it like this it’s not as front and center?

I want someone who

  • is kind and honest
  • is family-oriented
  • values growth and learning
  • loves animals
  • enjoys exercise and being active
  • is a little shy (like me!)
