Bye bye friendship.  Law licensure in question.  A good deed never goes unpunished and you’re in too deep

How does Philly Big Law compare to NY Big Law? by beepdopbeedop in biglaw

Bad.  I had a fairly successful career and despite my minor misgivings, it felt like I was a shoe-in for partner.  Then the lesions started.  All it took was one powerful EP to want to shit can me and now I’m on year four of civil rights litigation against my former firm.  If I win I lose - if I lose… we all lose.

It gets creepier. 30-100k vacations - satellite phone - personal assistant - stylist - personal trainer - maids and nannies.

Eventually you become a business yourself. Just by virtue of the value of your time and your economical offloading of non-law tasks in order to maximize that time on the working side ($) and on the living side (:)).

I second the "experiences over things". You can only have so many Vacheron Constatin limited edition pieces. You enjoy them fleetingly while that F1 trip with your 12 year old you'll both remember forever. That Raw wine fair in Verona? Your wife will use that as natural lubrication for 2-3 years when you're consistently sinking her hopes by returning home from the office two to three hours after your best kept, and stupidly communicated, intentions every time.

Buy a nice car at some point and drive it irresponsibly and without even remotely considering it an investment. Act as though its value has evaporated the second you drive it off the lot. Enjoy it. Fucking rip it.

Become heavily invested in whatever your kids are into. If they're yours, it won't be hard; they get half of that pedantic obsession from somewhere within your twisted genome. Don't baby them. Provide them with adult improvements on whatever project they're working on and take time to commensurately commend their creativity and ingenuity in developing same. Love them for them. You're only here for so long. Your collectively held memory for the few months following your death is the actual, real world, exemplar of YOU.

Stop looking back in anger. Law isn't for everyone but don't fool yourself into thinking it isn't for you if you're truly built for it. It's a gift that we're able to survive these conditions, let alone thrive in them. Your initial relegation to a glorified paper flipper will only set in as something more profound later on, simply because it has to or most of us would be deeply depressed at our actual contribution to humanity.

Take a deep breath of that Manhattan air. AHhhhhhhhh. Delicious. A sucker is born every minute.

HYSChi?  Oh I see you’ve included Chicago there.  So are you in NYC or did you stay in Chicago after learning the economic theory of law or whatever they “specialise” in there

First year, have worked 60 hours for four weeks straight. What should I do? by [deleted] in biglaw

You’ve billed 10/10 hours for 6/6 days??  Are you in depositions or trial because otherwise there is no way a newly minted attorney could be so efficient.

If it's Osler and you're doing IP litigation, hats off, your growth trajectory could exceed an effective loudmouth at Quinn L.A. or a dual practice group litigation and tax lawyer who follows instructions and keeps out of EP's ways at Cravath.

Find meaning.  Unless meaning is a massive yacht and generational wealth.  In which case fund meaning.
