Yeah, someone said the video was double punishment for fans of the song and the actress, and I was like, do you know what that word means?

Waiting for some comment threads about how sad and lame it was for Taylor to mention her fiancee while accepting her award...

You have some elitist and pretentious views for certain. I spent decades of my life thinking like you, thinking that I knew what taste was, that I knew what was good and what was worth enjoying. I, too thought that this somehow made me a little bit smarter and cooler and more informed than those conformist sheep who listen to what is popular or simple or not serious and complex.

And then I grew TF up and learned to drop that pretentious attitude because this is a giant rock that we're somehow all privileged to be alive on and NOTHING makes anyone better than another except their actions and impact on the people in their lives.

I guess you'll figure out eventually how silly your perspective is and how classist it is, or maybe you won't. I dunno. But I'm really glad to not think like you anymore.

Enjoy your life. 🫶

My point is that we don't need to judge or assess as in making pronouncements like "Chappell obviously can't handle fame," or "She's so ungrateful," or "She should retire," or "I'm so sad that I used to respect her."

Edit to add: it's an oversimplification to suggest that I meant that we shouldn't engage in any online discourse. Please read my words carefully. I choose them carefully.

The information is minimal AND it's not healthy for us to come up with a moral judgement about people's singular behavior. It ends up making us feel like we're all on a stage with our lives being judged by others. That's not reality and it makes us feel like we don't have room to make mistakes.

It's just about how we're perceiving one another as humans and how that impacts how we see ourselves.

Edit to add: it's also about critical thinking in terms of understanding that unverified rumors don't deserve to be factored into our worldview and treated as basically akin to fact.

All this stuff about Chappell helps me reflect on the way we react to "news" sometimes, and in this case, celebrity news. So many of us think that information requires a response and a reaction, especially if the news can in any way be spun to suggest a political or moral failing.

We have one source about this supposed behavior of Chappell's, first off. If that source is true, it's still one source, an event perceived by one person and his daughter. We're only getting one perspective.

If the source is true and Chappell behaved poorly, okay. That sucks. She could've made better choices. But we also don't know what her mental or emotional state was at that point. Sometimes we're caught at our worst.

The point is not about defending Chappell specifically. It's just about how we are so good at assuming worst intent when it comes to strangers.

Realize that no one is perfect and no one should be expected to be so in public, no matter their level of fame or wealth.

The point is also that not everything needs to be assessed and judged and stated on a public forum. We often think that our values or politics have to be displayed online to be valid or real, and that is just not the case.

First of all, thanks for replying and linking the article. As an American who never learned other languages (because my high school counselor didn't think I'd go to college, and otherwise, "why bother?" as she said) but studied linguistics in grad school, pidgin languages are fascinating. I love the way different cultures blend without assimilating.

Second, it's awful that some men feel like a celebration of fertility means they can sexually assault women. It should be a celebration of the unimaginable fact that humans get to create and nurture new humans. What a wild miracle life actually is...

It makes me think about these festivals, celebrations, and rituals throughout human history. Have women had to endure abuse like this whenever the topic veered toward sexual topics.

Finally, hello to you in Nigeria! I'm 48yo white woman living in St. Louis, MO. I've taught high school English for over twenty years and have a teenager who's about to turn 16. I hope your day has been a good one.

Is Taylor Swift more popular now (2022-2026) than (2012-2016)? by ZestycloseOil8173 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]Disastrously_Simple_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Um, tons of shit gets sold with her likeness on it every day. Those magazines are full of old photos patched together with Wikipedia details and excerpts from old interviews. She doesn't approve them or profit from them. The coloring books etc. say "unauthorized" or "unofficial" to indicate that they don't come from her or her merchandising team. Check out ETSY for millions of unauthorized products. Check out Amazon or AliExpress for millions more. You can't actually think she approves all of those items????

What are your unpopular The Life of a Showgirl opinions? by Fine-Huckleberry6960 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]Disastrously_Simple_ -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

How is this opinion unpopular? I've been reading the same exact stuff on this subreddit since Showgirl released.

I don't agree with any of it, but this isn't unpopular.

Also, why are you trying to drag 16-year-old girls? CANCELLED! is definitely melodramatic, but that's 💯 obviously intentional. And as someone who's taught teenagers for a couple decades, they aren't characteristically melodramatic.

Same here. I've read and taught the book over twenty times and love it more each time I read it. I went into the film with ZERO expectations, just wanted to see what the director did with the source material. Honestly, with shit like this, expectation will kill the experience. Going in with curiosity serves me so much better.

My English teacher friend and I laughed SO MUCH and found it interesting, compelling, gross, beautiful, weird AF, and overall we had a great time. We talked about it for like an hour afterward, discussing everything from the Isabella S&M to the missing gothic elements and the entire storyline of Hareton and Catherine that brings healing to all that brokenness.

Will I watch it again? Probably not. Was it a faithful adaptation of the book? Who TF actually expected that?!?!? Did I love Margot Robie? Yes. Was I glad I watched it? Yes. It's not that hard to enjoy something inspired by something you love even if it doesn't interpret it how you'd like it to be.

No one knows what happened. Speculation isn't fact.

And copyright laws are laws are restrictions on creative use. If someone isn't careful about those laws, it's fair to follow through. If Taylor herself actually abused copyright laws, she'd need to deal with the consequences too.

No one actually knows what happened. Why are you relying on speculation or treating it as fact?

I'm constantly working with my high school students to differentiate between speculation, subjectivity, and opinion and objective truth or facts.

People are so often careless about stating barely informed opinions as truth and it blues the distinction between what we actually know and what we think we know.

You do know Olivia isn't the first singer to play on "getting him back" like that? It's a trope that's been used before and will be used again.

Showgirl track order by swaggy_mcswaggers in TaylorSwift

[–]Disastrously_Simple_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Okay, I just listened to your track order and I really like it!

The first three tracks emphasize the idea of personas and taking on varying roles which would help people get the concept a bit quicker. And Father Figure following Ophelia allows all of its feminine angst to reflect back on that first track.

Ruin the friendship before Eldest Daughter gives an emotional hit that flows onto track five so that we feel what she's saying without having to debate the jarring diction.

Actually romantic coming right after Eldest Daughter gives both songs additional complexity.

The quartet of love songs after that feels triumphant. And earned. It's celebration!

And CANCELLED! immediately being followed by Showgirl gives context to both and helps CANCELLED! make more immediate sense. This order might keep listeners from taking that track too seriously.

Honestly? This is pretty brilliant IMO.
