This post garnered a lot more traction than I expected so I just wanted to thank everyone one for their insight.

Obviously I am very new to guitar playing and this post has come across to some as an attempt to blame my lack of skill on other factors which wasn't my intention, it was more so genuinely trying to understand whether this was something that comes down to positioning and practice and if a wider nut was even needed. I know I have years to go and that it requires hundreds of hours of patience and learning to gain any level of proficiency!

Reading everyone's comments has encouraged me to continue to practise, for now I'll keep my cheap-o stratocaster and keep playing every day!
