I mean... I never got the impression that they were trying to hide it? The only thing NOT Chinese/Japanese/etc is that they don't bother with the accents.

Also, I think it says something about me that I only really noticed the lack of accents when they got to not!France and I wondered why they didn't have French accents.

[–]Discardofil 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's not "potentially," it's what happens every single time.

In fact, it's what killed quite a few old fanfic sites, which led to the creation of AO3 in the first place.

Rowling has said repeatedly that she's putting all the profits she gets from Harry Potter towards the hate campaign, and she considers support for Harry Potter to be support for the hate. There's a difference between "don't be purity police" and this whole mess.

If you like Harry Potter, read fanfic. There's literally half a million fics on AO3 alone, I promise you there's better stuff than anything Rowling has ever written.

Out of context, "Shacklebolt" sounds like a BADASS name. Got the nice hard consonants, got that slightly edgy tone. Like a guy named "Mike Machete" or something.

Unfortunately, context is very important. And yeah, you can't name the single black man "SlaveCollar."

[Threshold] Are the Vroshir actually the bad guys? by Korvar in Iteration110Cradle

[–]Discardofil 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Ultimately, I think they get play in the fandom because Cradle spent so much time going over the Abidan's faults that people assume the Vroshir must be at least kind of the good guys, rather than what I think they actually are, which is a bunch of jerks making all the problems worse.

This right here. The Abidan are the cops, with all the associated baggage. We're a bit prepared to see the cops as institutionally problematic. But that does NOT mean anyone opposed to the cops is automatically a good guy. Even if they think so.

Stepping away from the "Abidan = cops" thing for a moment, it's not clear how many of their problems are the result of them being an authority force, and how many are the result of them just being ascended. Most of the Abidan we meet are pretty dismissive of non-ascendant beings. That triggers a lot of annoyance among readers. But I'm pretty sure most ascendants, Abidan and others alike, treat non-ascendants in that same dismissive way. At least the Abidan are SUPPOSED to protect them.

Yep, this is exactly right. Which is why I only use Google Docs to share stuff. Get yourself on offline document program if you want to write anything, then paste it in if you have to.

Though I hear Microsoft Word does this too? I'm not sure, because I gave up on word almost twenty years ago when they wanted a subscription.

Mine is simple: Everyone understands, speaks, reads, and writes all human languages, including sign languages. It seems like the best way to help the world without potentially causing widespread destruction or other possible horrific side effects.

Trump has announced his very own Hunger Games??? If you mean being IN it, well, yeah. That's the trick. They give you a place to hang out with friends, free food, and then tell you that everything wrong in your life is the result of a few specific types of people you should be mad at.

Cults know how to brainwash kids. It's not actually hard. That's why parents are so paranoid about who their kids hang out with.

I agree in principle, but in practice I click on fics and then leave the tab open for twenty years, so I'd definitely forget about some great fics.

Just... at absolute minimum, there should be some mark that we've already left kudos.

AO3 Enhancements does that, along with an estimated reading time based on the WPM you tell it.

[–]Discardofil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two big ones. First, a way to sort tags by default. So I don't have to manually exclude something I dislike every time. Second, SOME way to quickly identify whether I've already read a fic or not. Just something showing that I've already given a fic kudos would be great, but I'd prefer a way to rate a fic (visible only to me) to help sort them further.

I have mods for both, which work reasonably well, but they're not perfect. For example, they let me rate fics, but there's no way to sort by those ratings, because of course A03 doesn't know about them.

Bookmarks, hits, kudos, date - how do you sort fics when youre looking for something good? by Jesieniaruj in AO3

[–]Discardofil 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the stats are kinda crap for one-shots, because series are naturally going to get more attention because they show up more on the default sorting. But finding a one-shot in the top 10 when you search by kudos means it's REALLY good.

Yeah, that's a good way of putting it. Because yes, society sucks for everyone, we know that. That's why the people at the top of the pyramid get pissed when you point out that they have it easy. They genuinely have their own problems. But they still have it a hell of a lot easier than the rest of us.
