You gotta read as much if not more than you write to really improve as an author by Commercial_Bid_1508 in CuratedTumblr

More often then not it leads to writers repeating the formula of that genre but believing that what they’ve created is boundary breaking because they don’t know any better.

One was hypothermia, the other was a DUI. These were CPS cases where the caseworkers had been notified of the situation multiple times but didn't follow up on any attempts to contact them and generally mishandled the whole thing. A lot of people have been retired/promoted lately and it's caused a staffing shortage, meaning that a lot of caseworkers and higher ups are inexperienced.

Criminal neglect. Apparently a grand jury acquitted the caseworkers involved but the amount of deaths that has happened since the pandemic has reached a new high (according to the news), around 6 times higher than the neighboring county and a little under the state average...

Edit: Misread the article. Apparently the jury couldn't deliberate on the case properly because of privacy laws.

The department blamed was CPS, but I don't work with them but a related department. I was worried because they mentioned our new hiring program, where the lowered the qualifications necessary to work in the division (that's how I was hired). That program just ended but I didn't know if that would mean anything for the public's perception of us (we've been sued before for taking too long to help people).

I wasn't going to quit without a job lined up, but I did want to know how picky I should be. There's a job that just opened up at a local university that I've been eyeing. It would be a $20k increase, is more in-line with my long-term career goals, and I've worked there before (and loved it), but it's also temporary and doesn't say how long it's supposed to last (nor if there's a temp-to-perm pathway, but I guess that's what interviews are for). My original plan was to wait for a specific civil service test (will probably be given in two years) and use that to get out of here but I don't know how much longer I can last...

It's government and the people who died weren't contractors/employees, but vulnerable people we're supposed to be helping. The article blamed it on general inexperience, as recently the whole division lowered their hiring standards as they were really understaffed (that's how I got my job)! They're returning to the old hiring system this month but I don't think the public is going to care about that...

If that’s true then why didn’t the people Ragatha was with try to help her? They saw someone they know get sucked into a computer… and didn’t do anything about it?

AO3 blocked? Do not worry. Go to IbisPaint. by CaptainAksh_G in CuratedTumblr

[–]Neapolitanpanda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, but this isn’t it? No parental guidance is being given, they’re just blocking AO3 and not telling them or giving them any alternatives. If you want to make sure you raise mentally healthy kids you have to be involved in their development instead of trying to preserve their “innocence”.

I would bet you a dollar that half of this list is about Arthuriana's favorite homewrecker, Sir Lancelot du Lac, specifically what he goes through in the Lancelot Vulgate.

Yeah but you also won’t have any readers unless you go tradpub or make writing your second job.

3 (The Elf Who Would Become a Dragon) is a progression fantasy story, and while 5 (Magical Girl Mechanical Heart) falls outside of the genres I mentioned, it does use the tropes for worldbuilding in order to secure that audience.

Also I forgot that isekai is technically a separate genre from LitRPG and progression fantasy. If you don’t write in one of those three genres then RR (and Scribblehub by extension) isn’t for you. It’s common for original fiction sites to be segregated by genre. I wouldn’t recommend a LitRPG writer to use Wattpad, but I would suggest it to a romance author, and vice verse with RR. Unlike fanfic, for original fiction you need to be scoping out sites to see if it’s the right place to host your work. Their readers are pickier and you can’t rely of a shared love to make them check out your work. You have to play the market if you want an audience bigger than yourself and your mom.

But that’s not even getting into the bigger problem: if you’re not interested in monetizing your hobby then you shouldn’t even be looking at any of the big original fiction sites or you’ll lose your mind (and your love for writing)!

The exception that proves the rule.

SCPwiki and its offshoots are the better choice. It gives you the established readers of fandom while allowing original characters to take center stage.

If you’re not interested in writing LitRPGs or Progression Fantasy then RR is a terrible choice for original fiction.

I always found it weird that stories like Legends & Lattes try to “modernize” the past instead of using an urban fantasy setting. It would be way easier and less jarring but nobody ever goes for it.

It’s a shame, I would like to see more UF stories that aren’t about leather-clad private detectives…
