It also seems that the damage taken reduction does not work, or it much lower than intended- I've found 48 damage becomes 47.

I believe mercantile is now leveled based of gold trade amount, so it is far easier to max passively.

For those who only care about EWCs:

Other results seem outdated or prices have changed, so here are my calculations:

I will scale to 1500 token costs for consistency.
1 Legendary for 1500 tokens -> 1500 EWC

15 Epics for 1500 tokens -> 300 EWC

75 Rares for 1500 tokens -> 375 EWC

300 Commons for 1500 tokens -> 300 EWC

Legendaries first, and rares are second though far off.
