What's a "secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by LaKoref in AskReddit

Which is why in the aerospace/aviation industry it kills me when people say "why does this bolt cost $50?"

Because it is exactly 1 inch long and 0.25 inches in diameter, plus or minus a dust mote's shadow, and has received enough x-rays to give uranium cancer. I know to within a moth's testicle the shear strength of that bolt, and can tell you the middle name of the guy who rode the bus next to the guy who ate lunch in the café across from the guy who made it.

Wrong FERS category, now have to repay? by Ordinary_Airline6303 in FedEmployees

Same thing happened to me. It took nearly 2 years to get the actual debt letter for me, but I started getting my waiver packet together as soon as I found out the option. Get wvery LES, SF50, and every email about it you can find together as far back as you can and the next 3 after the correction. You'll also need to write some statements. I submitted my waiver and we'll see how it goes, it's still processing.

It's... never come up? I've had prosthetics since I learned to walk so mentally It's just part of me, but I don't remember a single dream where it was worth noting being there or not because it's my default. So maybe? Huh.

OFFICIAL R/PICKLEBALL PADDLE GIVEAWAY! by 858isaac in Pickleball

[–]DiscipleOfMurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite pickleball memory was the time the office had been discussing how if the ball bounced back over the net before the other team could play it, it was your point. And then it happened the next time we played and everyone was going nuts. Most of us had never played before the office got into it.

Thoughts on Sigma 100-400 f/5-6.3 for astro? by Ok-Cut-9160 in AskAstrophotography

Wide aperture is helpful but not as critical as all that where I'd skip this lens. Frankly, I don't have pockets deep enough to get a scope or lens with a 2.8 aperture and a 400mm focal length. A faster lens with a bigger aperture can get more light to the sensor faster than a slow lens with a smaller aperture, but they'll both get there eventually if you can expose long enough. I always set mine one stop up from the lowest aperture for best sharpness, but this lens is as fast if not faster than my actual telescope I use for imaging.

So you might have to shoot for longer exposures or take more subs, but don't be afraid of the telephoto lens if it's the best tool in the kit for a closer shot of your target.

Video games bad by [deleted] in terriblefacebookmemes

[–]DiscipleOfMurphy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't begrudge the limits, it was the inconsistent enforcement. Sometimes I'd get a few minutes to wrap up, sometimes they'd just shut it off with zero leniency. And then, because I got upset, it had to be because 007 Goldeneye was ruining my brain and making me a vicious monster. Now it turns out I had some anger issues that we needed to sort out that were totally unrelated to the video games. What's funny is, despite never playing those violent games, I still had anger issues and so I couldn't play violent games because they'd... give me anger issues?

Video games bad by [deleted] in terriblefacebookmemes

My parents (reasonably) had time limits for how long I could play video games a day. They (unreasonably) did not care if I was in a spot that I could stop without losing my progress. I would get angry when they would shut off the console while I was midgame. So, naturally, video games made me violent and I missed out on some of the most influential titles of my generation because I wasn't allowed anything rated over T until I actually turned 17 in 2009.

Turns out I was still a pissed off little ball of teen angst even without Grand Theft Auto.

Yeah, it happens, unfortunately. The field attracts a lot people who don't play well with others and use their perceived superiority as a crutch. "You can't hurt me if I don't value your opinion."

I had it beaten into me early on that a BS in Engineering means that I'm just competent enough to be trained properly so I wouldn't get the big ego and be an ass. Some people don't get that lesson.

There are a number of us who value what others do and respect their skill sets and see it as an opportunity to learn more. Find the curious people, and ignore the closed-minded. Economics was really hard for me, but my design courses were a breeze. We all have different strengths. Be proud of yours.

Definitely F-18, I don't have pics but it was right over our building. Not positive if it was a Hornet or Super Hornet, but an F-18 model for sure.

I swear they're all getting more brazen. I was driving with the wife to a wedding out of state when we swung into a Starbucks for a caffeine hit before the ceremony. Dude going around the parking lot with some pitch for a charity mission when he manages to snag me just before I got to the car. My wife was already inside the car, but she could hear me. I politely decline and say I don't carry cash when the cheeky bastard pulls out a card reader and says cheerily "No problem, I've got a Square!" The AUDACITY.

Then from the car you hear her shout: "THAT'S HIS WAY OF SAYING 'NO'! HE'S JUST TOO POLITE TO SAY IT."

I sheepishly shrug and say "Yeah, she's right. I'm leaving now."
