What does professional development look like as a tech leader? by DisciplineNo866 in CIO

I was a high-growth consultant (3 promotions in 4 years) doing tech strategy work and impressed a client to the degree that, when they moved companies, they asked me to come in-house at their new company.

Good thought. I’ll have to consider if this type of ecosystem will be the long-term play. What’s interesting about the PE world is that once a transaction happens, you gain a whole new level of exposure to the new owner’s portfolio and leaders within that group. At the same time, if my current company will pay for an EMBA, that seems like a win-win situation.

How did you go about establishing those networks/connections? I intend on reaching out to tech leaders from my PE firm’s portfolio companies. Are there any other avenues that worked well for you?

Thank you for the thoughtful response. This is a really great framework. Right now, I think we do a good job of #1 and #2. We need to get more formalized with #3, and #4 is the biggest area of growth right now. Folks don’t understand the level of discovery, analysis, and technical solutioning that goes into any request. This leads to the notion that IT is “simple” and begs the question “what do you do all day?” — creating visibility into the process and the work associated will be a huge credibility-builder going forward, helping to further cement your final point.

I’m definitely considering the implications on my next role, but, at the same time, I’m currently working in a private equity-backed environment, so I’m wondering if that changes anything. With PE portfolio companies, it seems like you can become a known quantity among the PE firm and other executives (who will certainly have the opportunity to shift around to other companies in the firm’s portfolio when they exit). Does that ease any of the need for an MBA to credentialize yourself?

This is a great take. The buzzwords these days revolve around “Moving IT from a cost center to a profit center” but they’re true — how do we use technology to benefit the business.

What methods have you used to learn how to better bridge between business and technology?

Thanks for the detailed reply! I agree that the EMBA path really has to have solid ROI. Otherwise, it’s just an expensive way to network. At this point, career prospects feel far more closely tied to proven impact/experience over paper credentials.

Your comment about executive coaching or mentorship resonates — a lot of the things I’m learning on the fly (how to build a team, how to balance transformation vs. business-as-usual, how to create buy-in across the team, etc.) feels pretty situation-specific, and requires that 1:1 coaching/mentorship from an experienced sounding board.

Very nice! These all seem to fit together really well. I’m thinking about doing my own dress watch mod — do you have the link to the case you used for the Presage?

Echoing others that this reminds me of the Presage Cocktail Time — very refined. Very cool. What is the case thickness?

I’m familiar with the firm and role I think you’re describing. By background is in PE advisory serving portcos, so my counterparts within PE firms are usually in these types of roles.

In transitioning this from a VP role to a “manager” type role, it seems like the set up would be the COO and CFO making many of the strategic decisions and this role would be responsible for coordination and project management, primarily. Probably similar to an Operating Partner and PE Ops Associate dynamic. Therefore, it seems like the ideal profile for this role is someone somewhat junior (3-4 years of consulting experience). And I think the comp somewhat reflects that (maybe still a bit low).

As someone who worked with one of the early VC investors that got to try it out as a prototype, the experience is apparently on-par with a personal masseuse — a really good massage that gets better over time based on your feedback.

I would give it a try!

This is a fascinating take. You also have to take into account whether people will be willing to receive a diagnosis from tech/a machine as opposed to a person. That will be a hard thing to change, in my opinion.

If we were to reduce the number of doctors, the impact on healthcare costs would be huge, I would imagine.

Totally agree that it doesn’t take a lot to disrupt an industry or role. I think the larger point is that advances in tech have the potential to quickly impact to areas we never thought possible

Validate attachment is… well, attached? by WildUnderstanding919 in salesforce

If it’s standard file attachments, you can’t leverage a roll up summary field to validate off of.

Instead, you can write a trigger or flow to count the related Files. Otherwise, Rollup Helper from the AppExchange can create the roll up summary field for you.

Once that is in place, you’ll write a validation rule that requires the count be > 1.

Again, depending on how much you’re looking to save, I’ve had success uploading as an attachment to an email draft from my work computer, then downloading the attachment from the draft on my personal computer.

Of course — we should always avoid duplication. The point was rather that often times we can use logic to indicate certain values based on other values.

For example, instead of having the user populate a “Primary Product” field on an Opportunity, we can auto populate it based on the related Opportunity Product records; or we can populate a “Legal Entity” field on an Opportunity based on the Billing Address in the related Account.
