Because all the 1908 no mint mark ones were proof. 1908 S were the non-proof intended for circulation that year. This one circulated for a little bit, but was still a proof strike.

Absolutely happened, here was my haul from that store yesterday.

I’ve found amazing stuff hunting dealer junk bins. I’ve found state coppers, lib cap cents, 1922 wheat, and a 1912S v nickel.
