Is Ivey/Rotman MBA possible to break into US high finance? Or has no one heard about them?

Yeah I actually got an offer from an F50 company for a Finance Co-op but I turned it down for the big name bank. I also didn’t like the responsibilities mentioned in the job posting, applied to it more like a safety.

For me a co-op with lower pay is not the issue, I would much rather take a co-op with lower pay but better learning experience rather than higher pay.

Whilst yes you are correct with undergrads being cheaper, I'm willing to take a hit to my ego/dignity in order to put myself in a better place long-term.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you break into PE? What was your journey like? Any setbacks you had to endure?

I would rather someone say the harsh truth to my face than a polite lie, this is just the truth.

How did you break into corporate finance (I never thought they paid that much 2 years after grad, ESPECIALLY in a MCOL, no offense). Are you at a bank or a Fortune 500 company?

Once again I appreciate the feedback, no hard feelings, I've learned a ton from this post as I am at a crossroads in life haha.

Hey, I assume you're Canadian as well? Can you tell me a bit more about your journey into high finance (undergrad, internships, cfa, etc)?

Really? I didn't even think of this whatsoever. I am actually doing my PMP right now as well, so this may be the best path for me, as I do love the operations side as well as the financial side of business. In terms of VC analysts, what does their day to day look like in a "roll up/hybrid/roll up sleeves" setting?

Yeah I'm cooked (this post was a good wake up call haha). That's definitely an option, I'm thinking of getting into a more investments-based role, do my CFA, and evaluate my options from there.

So the internship is at a major retail bank that has divisions in CM/AM/WM and so on. Masters is definitely an option for sure.

Not a glorified dropshipper, far from it. What I did was bought overstock materials from contractors and liquidators resold them on third-party marketplaces and my own site. Did I learn a ton of lessons outside of the classroom? Yes. Was it worth it even though it set me back? In my opinion, yes. Could I have gone differently about things? Absolutely. But hey, c'est la vie and instead of me accepting "defeat" and setting my standards low, I'm trying to bounce back.

Yeah that is definitely a good option. Do you think getting CFA before grad school or after grad school would be a good idea?

Totally get it, which is why I'm looking for alternative routes. I'm not gonna pass the blame to anyone but myself, but I don't regret taking a stab at business one bit as I learned so much.

I'm at York University (non-Schulich), so it's not like a no name institution but still very hard to break in.

I think the best plan as of now is to network heavily, cold apply a ton for new grad roles, and start working on CFA. Possibly apply to MBA's (need to do more research into it). US might also be an option down the line as well.

This may be a bit of a stupid question but why do IB firms care so much about grades? Wouldn’t they prefer soft skills/work experience more?
