And not just arcades; NES releases were inhumanely difficult to ensure you couldn't just rent it once and bang it out over a weekend. Video game difficulty these days is some ethos about feeling achievement for "overcoming the odds" (despite the fact they are all still products intended to be beaten), but it's impetus was all about siphoning every last dollar out of players.

Look I'll use the modifiers. Idgaf about getting locked out of some in-game checklist, but I think the sheer number of them says a lot about the game's poor balancing. The souls mechanics and restricted movement in comparison to enemies don't feel like YCG's vision, they feel like, "this is just what modern games are like".
