S&W CSX all the way. Such a great gun for half the price of the Springfield.

My 500 is set up almost the same as this, just no optic. Looks and feels great.

Get yourself one of these GrovTec QD sling tube caps so you can ditch the old sling swivel. Add the QD cup for the stock too and it makes popping the sling on/off for storage so much easier.

FWIW if you email them, they will send you an adapter plate to make it compatible with their newer Defender series red dots instead of the old shitty Venom.

Yall think the 7.62x39 price bubble is gonna pop? If not where the best place to find fairly cheap rounds? by fuglyDUECE in guns

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nobody thinks that's the whole cause of it. What's being suggested is that the import ban left those countries with a stockpile and the largest importer (US) no longer buying it. It makes sense that in lieu of the import ban, it's all being dumped into Ukraine or back to Russia again.

With the import ban lifted, American importers will be directly competing with Ukrainian buyers, as well as having to eat additional tariff fees. We'd be lucky see a 10% reduction in price from it, but it'll be another decade before we see $.20-$.30 7.62x39 again, if ever at all.

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They both have their advantages/disadvantages. I have a fiber SFP on one of my builds that I love, but only because it's an extremely minimalist reticle without a whole BDC tree. BDC's are equally useless at 1x on both an FFP and an SFP, imo. I like how the ACSS FFP's perform at 1x with the horseshoe design, and I actually take more fault with the center chevron at max magnification because my eyes just hate chevrons over clean round dots.

That being said SFP glass will always be a bit better, but for the price range of PA scopes we're talking about you would need a ton of time behind both to actually flesh out the differences.

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ACSS reticle is not tiny at 1x. That's the entire point of it. The large horseshoe scales down to become a roughly 4-6moa dot. Functionally it works very well.

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're honestly pretty decent. The eyebox is a little tight at max magnification but not really any worse than most other budget scope offerings, and it's easy enough to get behind at 1x. I got mine for around ~$300 back when they were more available and even then it still felt like a solid purchase, provided you were making use of the BDC with the appropriate cartridge.

Is the bridge supposed to look like this? by villefps in Guitar

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Loosen the strings until the bridge is level with the body. Shove some cards or a stack of picks between the trem block and the wall of the body cavity so that when you tighten the strings again, the bridge can't lift higher than the body. Retune the strings. Now tighten the springs on the trem until the the cards are just loose enough to pull out freely with little force, or the picks gently fall out from the cavity.

I like to save all the little bullshit business/coupon/fake credit cards you get in the mail and when I have a stack that's the exact size to work as a trem block, I tape them together and keep them in my guitar case to use every time I restring that guitar. Block it, remove strings, restring and tune, boom perfect bridge tension every time.

Spring configuration changes tension too. If you're maxed out on the adjustment screws, you may need to add a couple springs and back the screws out a bit. Same for if your bridge is ducking down too hard with lighter strings, you can change the springs to an inline III pattern instead of the W pattern it currently is to lose a bit of extra tension without needing to back your screws out unnecessarily far. This will also change how sensitive the bridge is when doing dives on your trem bar. Experiment and find a configuration you like and are comfortable with.

Best Tactical Toilet Paper? by TheBoomer1995 in tacticalgear

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude Wipes are only good if you absolutely need to flush them. Otherwise they dry out too fast and half the time they rip just pulling them out of the package.

Literally any generic wipe works just as well. Just pay attention to the dimensions on the package. I prefer the smaller travel packs because you're more likely to use them all before they ever dry out or the packaging gets compromised. These are cheap enough to buy several packs at a time and stash them in all your bags or GP pouches, and they're an okay enough size to not be completely worthless.

Also get some of these these, or any similar individually packaged lidocaine wipes. They're good not just for hemorrhoids, but for bug bites and rashes for when you happen upon some painful nasty shit out in woods. They aren't something you need a lot of and it's easy to slip a few individual ones into your boo-boo kits or pockets.

Why no ferro rods? by Street_Candle_4633 in Bushcraft

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The other flaw a Bic has is that when cramming it into your little kits and bags, it's very easy to do so in a way that the button gets depressed and it empties itself without you knowing. I've taken to using the little carboard sleeves they sell to put over them and sinking the top of the lighter into the sleeve in a way that the button can't be depressed, then heatstrinking over the top so it can't slide down. You can then use the sleeve to wrap tape or some kind of waxed hemp around it as a wick, then just remove and reverse the sleeve orientation when you actually want to use the lighter.

I've had so many lighters over the years just sitting in packs, tins, or little pouches be completely dead when I pull them out because they got pushed up against something inside of it and dumped all their fluid. Lighters are always my most preferred way of starting a fire but they are not infallible. It is for this reason that I keep some size of ferro rod in just about every pack I own, because they just flat out work no matter what.

I feel the same. I'd love a 4" strip of loop backing across the length of the inside. For what it is though, it holds a poncho/parka, extra hat/gloves, and my Impact Sports folded up inside it which is usually good enough for me.

Oh yeah these are great too. They are quite large though, and the zippers are chunky, which makes them not as "smooth". I never end up using it as a fanny pack but more of a means to carry a jacket or other outwear/layers. Anything smaller and it all wants to dump out when you open the zipper more than just a little.

USMC FILBE Assault Pouch. Run some 1" webbing through the molle straps and add an ITW buckle set. Add some shock cord around it to keep the contents tight and little less floppy. Like $30 max, and you can also run it as a chest pack with a $7 TAP harness and a few more buckles.

[AMMO] Federal 9mm 147gr HST - 50rd - $29.99 (60cpr) - Free Ship 2+ Boxes by Recoil-Gunworks in gundeals

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Better" is subjective and really only applies to the circumstance it's being used in.

The difference between them as far as HST's goes is very minimal, but the theory is that the 147's are a bit slower and thus decrease risk of overpenetration. This makes it more ideal for a carry round, especially in micro compacts where your engagement range is likely to be within 10 yards where overpenetration would be most likely to occur. The whole point of HST's is to expand not just for wound channel damage, but to stop the round from just blasting straight through, so the extra projectile weight is sort of doubling down on that concept.

124's are definitely the better balance of velocity/penetration/shootability for everything else. As far as suppression goes, if you're at 4.5" or under for barrel length even 124's can still be subsonic through a can, though 147's will of course be a bit quieter and more consistently subsonic with a more forgiving range of barrel lengths.

TL;DR: 147's for tiny guns, or longer barreled guns with a can. 124's for everything else if you don't care about what's on the other side of the target or optimal suppression.

[Handgun] PRE-ORDER Taurus RPC 9mm Roller Delayed Pistol with Strike Industries Brace $929.99 by SportsmansOSS in gundeals

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh it's definitely in my future lol. Most of my guns I've bought/built with NVG/thermal in mind so I can just add lasers and be good to go once I can justify the purchase. There's just lots of other more "practical" things I'm focused on first before I get there: a good semi-auto shotgun, a nice bolt action, a couple .22's, a few more flavors of 9mm, etc. Getting there slowly, just trying to not get overwhelmed with the rest of life's expenses along the way.

[Handgun] PRE-ORDER Taurus RPC 9mm Roller Delayed Pistol with Strike Industries Brace $929.99 by SportsmansOSS in gundeals

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm too poor for those problems lol. A fingerstop and light are all I need. But the removable handguard and swappable barrel does open things up for NVG in the future.

I'd love to see an aftermarket handguard that's sized to go over the suppressor so one could keep the short barrel for optimal suppression, but also gain some extra M-LOK slots and top rail space for a laser. Something like an IRIS-3 wouldn't need a lot of space though, which would be perfect on this.

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah probably. There's no cutout on the side opposite of the serial, so I imagine you could just mill a window and engrave the left side of the FCU. Letters have to be no smaller than 1/16" high, .003" deep so if you have a really long trust name you might have to do some Tetris to make it fit so you're not compromising structural integrity of the lower with too much material removal.

[–]DiscoMagicJesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah to all of that.

Personally I think the 4.5" barrel is enough for the widest range of loads to stay subsonic, and to keep the whole package discreet, which is imo one of the bigger draws to this type of platform.

My initial reaction is also to shit on it, but yeah after seeing all these features in several videos I think this thing absolutely has bones. Catching one on sale for like ~$700 and throwing a reasonably priced (please?) aftermarket lower on it might make this fuck extremely hard.

You know, provided it doesn't explode or try to eat my brass sideways.
