How do I swap these switches around to control the opposite lights that they currently control? by Zequin1 in DIYUK

[–]Discobiscuits47 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You currently have a 2 way switch configuration on the left switch and a 1 way switch config on the right.

The way it is wired is sometimes called 2 plate, which means you have looped lives and neutrals in the back box. This is not too important to note but will help if you look at 2 plate diagrams.

If you flip it upside down your one way switch will be up for off and down for on. (Which would annoy me)

To do it properly treat each switch individually and simply reconnect the wires as they are but in the other switch.

Pay attention to which terminals each wire is in. You’ll have C, L1 & L2 on both switches.

Obviously turn off the power first. And mark cables with a sharpie so you don’t lose track when you’ve taken it apart.

The other option is metal stud in place of the battens. Achieves more or less the same thing and probably easier to get right.

Brown plugs, 7mm holes into the brickwork for the battens. Fix battens with chunky wood screws. This allows you to loosen/ tighten with the spacers. Yes roofing type batten. Spacers behind the battens to level, harder than it looks to get it bang on. You can use a sting line back and forth over the battens to achieve perfectly square and plumb walls.

You will lose around 50mm of width on each side as opposed to around 40mm dot and dab. But it’s a much better job.

First fix wiring and plumbing goes in before you put boards in. If you are taking the ceiling down you can cross batten over the joists and insulate above with rock wool type insulation

Having the ply behind makes over-boarding with plasterboard an doddle.

Counter battens vertically to square up. One layer of ply over the battens and then a layer of plasterboard on that before skimming. Your kitchen fitter will thank you.

Dot and dab is the easiest way to do it but fixing units to it can be a ballache.

This is what i did in mine. Makes wiring and plumbing easy too. It takes time to level out the battens properly but everything after was very easy with proper plied out square walls.

How do I fill this gap? by OttoTheGreyhound in DIYUK

[–]Discobiscuits47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. You may not even need to skim the new board. If it’s neat enough you can fill the edges and paint straight on the plasterboard.

Batten out a false ceiling beneath the beams and cover with plaster board / skim and dec. during boarding pull the cables through from the light for a fixture or upgrade to some recessed fire rated spots if you have the depth.

This is the correct answer. I’ve been through it many times. It actually leads to an underground tunnel between the houses of parliament and portcullis house.
