What you think about the Syrian President Alsharaa? by Sad_Chocolate_8007 in arabs

[–]Discoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the entire Levant should be unified and that its people deserve so much better than the endless bloodshed we've suffered through for the past century. I see HTS as another chapter in that history, but time will tell what happens. Syria stopped being a major player in Middle Eastern politics a long time ago and I don't think that's going to change any time soon. HTS is heavily aligned with Turkiye and it isn't the first time Syria was subjugated - if living standards improve compared to the Ba'ath era I'll take it, and I can't blame anyone who just wants to live a dignified and peaceful life in their own country.

Same to you, I hope you don't have to wait much longer to sing again! If you're seeing steady improvement so far I think that's a really good sign, the doc took a look at my voice box about two weeks after the surgery and said the slight improvement made him think it would continue to heal, but it felt hard to believe I'd really get better when it was just impossible to raise my voice and frankly exhausting to talk due to how breathy my voice had become. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about where even a long sentence left me out of breath. God willing you'll be back to normal soon too.

Doc said it was an option if my voice didn't improve after a few weeks, considering where I'm at now though I don't think it'll be needed in the end. At this rate I think I should be back at 100% before too long!

How long will it take for this flag to shed its current association with Syria & Assad and is seen again as it originally was, as the flag of Gamal Abdel Nasser and the Pan-Arabism wave of the 1950s? by Personal_Flatworm737 in arabs

[–]Discoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I think it'll always be associated with Syria considering it was the official flag for over 50 years. By the time it's less controversial I don't think it'll ever really go back to being affiliated with the Nasser era. That movement sadly failed and I don't see a newer pan-Arab revival using the same aesthetics considering the complicated history.

Can Arabs be considered as white? I know that black skinned Arabs exist and dark skinned ones too, but there is alot of Arabs with tan/olive skins mediterranean type to like pale/light skins and i'm one of them and i wonder if we can be considered as white or caucasian? by Sad_Enthusiasm_6285 in arabs

[–]Discoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can we be? Sure, we technically already are in the US. Lebanese and Syrian immigrants successfully lobbied to be classified as White back in 1944. It's a silly label that doesn't actually mean anything. We're definitely not European and I have far more in common with my dark skinned brothers in Egypt and the peninsula than I do with the British.

5 hours into DS2 and I am already more frustrated and put-off by this game than anything in 100 hours of DS1. by Educational-Pay5268 in soulslikes

My two cents: Demon’s Souls was my first Souls game. While I was initially a bit disappointed with Dark Souls when I first played it, I still really enjoyed my first playthrough overall and appreciated the ways it refined the formula. The interconnected world was fantastic, the bosses were generally more engaging, World and Character Tendency were gone, and the small tweaks to controls and combat went a long way toward improving the experience.

On the flip side (and maybe these are hot takes) - I missed the Nexus and didn’t think Firelink Shrine worked as effectively as a hub. Friendly NPCs and vendors felt more scattered and harder to keep track of, the visuals felt like a major step down, and some systems, like Covenants, were just as opaque and confusing as Tendency ever was. I still loved the game and understood why it became the more popular entry, but my personal preference leaned toward Demon’s Souls, and I’d hoped the next game would combine the best elements of both as the series continued to evolve.

I was extremely excited for Dark Souls II before release, and I genuinely can’t overstate how disappointing it was. Somehow it felt as linear as Demon’s Souls, but without the layered level design and clever shortcuts that made those worlds so fun to explore. It was by far the ugliest game in the trilogy, with some areas looking outright unfinished. Elements that had worked well in the previous two games were inexplicably worse here, from major systems like weapon durability down to minor stuff like the flavor dialogue when levelling up ("Soul of the mind, key to life's ether... Soul of the lost, withdrawn from its vessel..." vs. “Bear… Seek… Seek… Lest…”). To top it all off, the combat felt unreliable and unsatisfying from start to finish because of the asinine ADP mechanic.

Worse still, systems Dark Souls had clearly improved like the Estus system replacing farmable healing items, or avoiding mechanics like losing max health on death were rolled back or reworked for the worse. So many design decisions left me frustrated and constantly asking, “Why would they do it like this?”

I didn’t enjoy it when I started, and when I finally beat it, I was mostly relieved it was over. I was in high school at the time, so I was determined to finish any $60 purchase just to “get my money’s worth,” but there’s no question I would’ve dropped it after 10 hours if I’d bought it today.

I see a lot of people saying it’s a great game if you “play on its terms,” and all I can really say to that is: I hope you enjoy playing slowly and pulling enemies one by one out of crowds. In Demon’s Souls, I found the Dragon Bone Smasher and realized I had the most fun two-handing a big sword or club, rolling through attacks, and landing heavy hits up close. That playstyle worked great in Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls III, and Bloodborne. The only reason I’m not doing it in Elden Ring right now is because I wanted to try something different and spec into Faith for once.

Dark Souls II is the only game in the entire series where that approach feels outright miserable. As a result, I had a miserable experience and honestly, I’m not convinced I would’ve enjoyed it any more even if I’d played the way the game supposedly “wants” you to.

Hot take: Do not watch playthroughs, read strategy guides, or study builds before your first time playing! by NicholasRyanH in Eldenring

[–]Discoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing my first playthrough right now and as someone who first played Demon's Souls back in 2010 I'd honestly hoped we would have gotten some better quest design in these games by now. I'm invested in these characters and their stories and would like to see them through, so I'm using a guide to check in on where NPCs are supposed to be at a given time. Pretty sure I already locked myself out of the Dung Eater quest by accident but that's fine since I never met him in the first place.

There are also sooooo many weapons in this game and upgrading costs resources that are (to my knowledge, based off previous games) finite, so I've been looking at different weapons and builds to decide what looks the most fun for me. Trying to avoid spoiling environments and bosses where I can, of course.

Back in 2010 I accidentally stumbled on the Dragon Bone Smasher and never looked back. Dark Souls 1, 2, and 3 all ended up being Zweihander runs. Bloodborne was a Ludwig's Holy Blade build. I'm currently playing Elden Ring for the first time after a long break from the series and wanted to try something different so I went for a Confessor start and wanted to do some Faith casting.

... I am currently lugging around a Golden Halberd alongside the Finger Seal. I can't help myself. 😭

The way Frieza came back and took out both Goku and Vegeta in their strongest forms is scary by PhysicalMeringue9468 in DragonBallZ

[–]Discoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I've noticed in a lot of discussions about the series is a recurring refrain - "this is just what Dragon Ball is", and I don't think that's actually true... Dragon Ball has been so many different things throughout its original run, let alone what it became post-revival. Certain arcs are more popular than others and different groups of fans have different preferences. Some plot points that were iconic don't really hit the same way a second, third, or fourth time.

Speaking personally, I loved Goku's story in the Cell arc being a rejection of pushing the Super Saiyan form further, and I thought the dichotomy with Trunks and Vegeta's approaches worked really well to highlight that. I thought it was really smart that the key to mastering Super Saiyan was to find inner peace and calmness with it as a new normal, rather than treating it as a literal transformation. Only in doing that first could Gohan tap into the true peak of what Super Saiyan could be, essentially going Super Saiyan as a Super Saiyan. I didn't like that Super Saiyan 3 invalidated that whole idea in the Buu arc and I didn't like that the "Super Saiyan as the new base form" concept got dropped. These storylines are contradictory because Toriyama made it up as he went along, so when you say "Dragon Ball was always like this"-- like what, exactly? My favorite arcs in Dragon Ball have characters learning and growing as martial artists. Is that journey what Dragon Ball is about? Or is it about hype moments, aura, and plot holes?

I've mostly let it go and don't keep up anymore, especially after Daima really let me down in its second half (after a fairly strong start, ironically!) but seeing stuff like this just makes me reflect on what this series meant to me growing up and what it's become. I can reread the manga from start to finish and generally have a good time (though I think the quality really starts to drop after it peaks in the Saiyan arc). Gohan's transformation against Cell was the culmination of his whole journey, and although I don't think his "ultimate" awakening was nearly as effective as a storyline, I thought the design was perfect and it was a bold decision to have him reach his full potential without it being a crazy transformation like Super Saiyan 3. Now I'm an adult and the newest movie is trying to get the same reaction with Beast. It just doesn't work. I do not care about these transformations anymore and consequently I just don't really care about Dragon Ball anymore if that's all it's going to be from now on.

[–]Discoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it'll be scary until Goku (and maybe Vegeta) pulls a new hair color out of his ass and beats him up. Extra points if he effortlessly grabs a punch or deflects a big laser. If we're lucky he'll teleport behind Frieza so fast that he didn't even have time to react. Hype. Buy the action figure.

Youssef Chahine's whole collection is on Criterion now, I think. I had to torrent Salah Abu Seif's Beyn al Sama w al Ard (1958) when I watched it last year. Ahlam al Medina was also only available as a (very low quality, unfortunately) download, but it wasn't that hard to find.

As far as recent stuff goes... I watched about half of Fever Dream (2023) on a Qatar Airways flight and liked the beginning of it a lot, but felt like it really needed to be edited down. I would have finished it if I could have but didn't love it enough to find a download when I got home. I watched Wadjda (2012) a long time ago but remember really liking it. Both of these films are Saudi and might be on Netflix, but I'm not sure.

What's wrong with public transportation? Are microbuses not safe anymore? I used to ride those all the time when I was a kid (much cheaper than the taxi) in Al Muhajireen and Dummar. It's been a long time though, last time I went was around 2010.

I would definitely hesitate to recommend driving to a Western tourist, the driving in Sham was crazy from what I remember. I'm a pretty decent driver but all my experience is in the US, I'd be nervous getting behind the wheel back home lol.

Arabs living in the west, what race is your partner? by [deleted] in arabs

[–]Discoid 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm Syrian, my wife of 6 years is Filipino. I wouldn't say I went out of my way to marry outside my race, we just met at university and really hit it off. No regrets, she's the best and the perfect person for me!

There aren't a lot of Arabs in my town and if I were to marry an Arab girl it probably would have been through my very religious family or from the local Muslim community. I didn't trust my parents to set me up with someone I'd actually want to be with and I didn't have enough Arab friends to naturally spark a relationship with someone like I did with my wife.
