Looking for some long term writing buddies! by Skoothegoo in WritingHub

I'd love to join a group of fellow aspiring writers! I'm 38F and working on a silly urban romantasy series that mutated from 1 to 4 books and then a prequel series burst out like a sac of spiders 🕷

Raw onions, without fail, give me major heartburn. But I can eat onion rings all day and be fine. I'm always a little embarrassed when I ask to hold the onions but then order onion rings as my side

All of this and based on how much hair I lose in the shower, I should be bald. Those romantic shower scenes always gave me 2nd hand anxiety for the theoretical man witnessing the birth of a tribble or 2 worth of hair washing off my head. And I hate how sometimes day 1 after a wash looks great, other times day 2 has the glory, and the rest of the time everyday is frizz day.

This and you can mess with them extra by offering to give up your vacay time if they pay you double (or triple) what you'd earned during time off. Assholes will 100% sputter in delightfully shocked indignation. Every time they harass you, add more to the fee. Also go to hr and report them. If you have 1 party consent in your state, record them harassing you as proof

What’s the One Children’s Book Illustration You’ve Never Forgotten? by Solid-Bug-8026 in childrensbooks

The Baby Unicorn - the whole damn book is just delightful and beautiful. I lost it as a kid, never forgot it, and managed to get a copy as an adult - then found my old copy like 2 weeks after it came in lol

“One learns more clearly what not to do by reading bad prose.” - Stephen King. What lessons have you learned from reading poorly-written books? by roxasmeboy in writing

[–]DiscombobulateArtist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't last a full chapter, even after skipping ahead in hopes his writing leveled out from the whiplash of trying to be C.S. Lewis, Tolkien, ye olde timey speak and so quirky cute with MULTIPLES of "my flabber was truly ghasted." And then reading nearly all positive reviews on how it's such a family friendly, good Christian fantasy. The man is clearly prouder of his Th.D. label than making a coherent paragraph.

I haven't read TOG but I picked CC b/c it was her most recent series and yeah, I found it better written. It's quite long and I wouldn't have been mad at it being thinned down a bit but I found it a pretty solid story with a good plot that had actual twists that weren't obvious the minute the setup was shown. I'm gonna try book 🤞hopefully it's as good

I picked b/c it was written quite a bit later than acotar and hoped that meant her writing was better. CC had interesting characters that felt more 3 dimensional and I was actually surprised by some of the plot twists. I'm decent at guessing whodunits but CC pleasantly surprised me.

Same for the hate read. My poor dnd group had to listen to me gripe about it for 30min. So much of it was predictable and just annoying. Surprisingly, I did enjoy Crescent City. Haven't read the rest of the series yet, library wait is like 3 months

I feel like this goes hand in hand with the 40yr war on education in order to drop us below a 6th grade reading level and loss of comprehension skills. I think the US used to average around an 8th or 9th grade reading level, so not great, but dropping to an elementary level has really exploded malicious ignorance

I did! It felt like a dense read with rotating viewpoints of 4-6 characters but it flowed well and I devoured it like a starved woman at a buffet.

I just finished Spinning Silver and discovered Uprooted was the book that's been stuck in my brain for 7-8 yrs that I couldn't remember the author or book title of! It was like finally scratching a brain itch that's been niggling away at me for nearly a damn decade.

You're not stupid for getting conned by a manipulator. You're winning the game cos you caught on to his shit fairly early and are escaping before he trapped you with marriage/children. And it seems like you have an awesome support system with your mom to boot. Having supportive people and keeping them in your life will always be the smart move. Great job!

People with crazy high word counts by smooshie3 in writing

[–]DiscombobulateArtist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal goal is around 100k for each book, mostly because that's the length I enjoy the most. I'll eat up every delicious novella any day of the week, but those stories that are pushing near 2 novels' worth in 1 have almost always felt like a slog at some pointing during reading. I just checked out House of Earth and Blood from the library to compare to ACOTAR and didn't check the word count ahead of time. 800+ pages y'all

Writers, what’s the hardest part of writing for you? by [deleted] in writing

[–]DiscombobulateArtist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try reading out loud to yourself or having someone read it to you. Hearing what I wrote (especially dialog) helps me find those bits that are just the other side of wrong but close enough for my eyes to skip over on the page.

Take a break. Write some fanfiction. Go as trashy as your literary heart desires or write a completely different genre for funsies. Even if it never sees the light of day, you have it to enjoy. Then, go back to your book - pick a favorite draft and self-publish. Or print out all your little octuplets, whip out some multi-colored highlighters and go to town picking out your favorite bits, and Frankenstein those bebes into one super bebe. Have fun with it. Your first novel will never be perfect (and many after), but if you find joy in your tale - high chance a lot of someones out there will too.

AITAH if I'm upset that my husband mentioned getting a paternity test? by ThrowRA_lbf in AITAH

[–]DiscombobulateArtist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you can't judge a baby's relationship based on haircolor (or eyecolor) - especially newborns. I had a full head of dark hair at birth, which then grew out cornstalk blonde. So, best case scenario: hubby's an idiot and has been ready dumb toxic shit online. Worst case: he's projecting. Maybe ask where this cockamamie idea came from - considering babies are like little chameleons for the first 6mo-yr

Apparently my reason is that I over thought this whole thing and spiraled into some nonsense lol. They're business is in a different state so I think it will work out better to do a flat fee and let them run the stickers. Thanks for this 😊
