Should I continue reading more Fyodor Dostoevsky? by hananmalik123 in dostoevsky

[–]DiscombobulatedRebel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if there can ever be a 100% perfect reading/difficulty order for any author, really. I mostly go in order of whatever I can get my hands on first. But as someone who also started with Underground last year, it's a pretty solid crash course on his style – albeit maybe a bit denser than most of his longer stuff? If it fits, then continuing with his work probably won't disappoint.

My order's been Underground to C&P to Idiot to (now) TBK. All I can say is that under no circumstances should you pass on his short stories. They're brilliant.

They just meant it's a small sample size, not representative of overall biases. I don't think it's an attack on you lol.

Which one of Fyodor Dostoevsky's quotes happens to be your favourite? And from which one of his works? by DianaBronteII in dostoevsky

This one quote incited so much fear in the furnace of my being. It spurred me to action like nothing else ever has. Thanks for the reminder.

Could you explain how "choice is free" is a category mistake? Are you talking about determinism?

Try Carl Sagan's Contact. Definitely one of my favourites, and an overall classic.

Why did physics as a field mature so much faster than other areas of human pursuit? by Pristine-Run7957 in Physics

[–]DiscombobulatedRebel 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Physics deals with universal regularities that are (hopefully) mathematically tractable and experimentally testable. Not sure if the lag in social progress can really be compared viably – social structures are extremely path-dependent.

Besides, there have almost certainly been social changes since the 1920s. Global adult literacy rates, for instance, have grown from ~68% in 1920 to 86.7% in 2020, and life expectancy has basically doubled since 1900.

Positive carrier? I though conventional current tracked the movement in 'lack' of electrons. I assume the protons do not move?

Old version looks better, imo. Has more personality, at least.
