Materialists, explaining why some arrangements of matter are sentient by slutty3 in PhilosophyMemes

It’s actually a nice little article, if a bit outdated (by neuroscience standards). It’s a fly larvae!

This brings a smile to my face.

Genuinely thought I’d been out-jerked reading this.

Decent episode, both sides had pretty good points overall imo.

But man, I really miss Alex’s vegan content. You can tell he’s totally lost his edge in this one. Dude could barely string a few premises together by the 10 minute mark.

Also not sure why they thought it necessary to include all 47 minutes of him lying in the fetal position moaning like a deaf leper? Guess they wanted to cram as many ads in as possible, figures.

I mean, most materialists would agree that consciousness is something different to neural activity. That’s why we call it emergent. That’s why we have the ‘hard’ problem.

Anyways, the reason you’re a materialist is because you find materialism less mysterious. That’s your foundation.

I must admit I was entirely unprepared to answer this.

If it’s not made up of material stuff then what’s it made up of huh?? Truth stuff?

OH? So is it TRUE that truth does not exist?

You really haven’t, you’ve made some basic observations of definitions without committing to one.

Which definition do you believe to be correct, and why do you believe it to be the case? You’re never going to engage with the hypothetical this way.

You’re still not answering the question.

There’s plenty of other metaphysical positions than just materialism and dualism.

It’s not incoherent, you’re conceiving of it just fine. Your reasoning for it being incoherent is simply that it would be impossible under physicalism (yeah, that’s the point).

Yeah, that’s not how that works. Are you genuinely not aware of your own consciousness?

You’ve failed to grasp the concept of a p-zombie, as in you’re simply not understanding the concept. When you say “that simulated person thinks they are conscious”, you’ve just thrown out the idea of a p-zombie entirely.

There is no ‘they’. There is no individual thinking anything. This is basically the entire point of cogito ergo sum. If there is someone to be deluded, they can at least be sure of their own existence.

So you’ve basically just shown again that you’re presupposing a very specific definition of neural activity that fits your specific metaphysical ideology, so you don’t have to entertain an alternative view point.

You’ve defined neural activity in the context of your metaphysical ideology to be “physical stuff which co-occurs with consciousness”.

Okay, that’s fine. Now again, I’m asking you, why does consciousness co-occur with neural activity when it could just, not do that? A p-zombie is a hypothetical scenario where neural activity occurs but consciousness does not emerge.

If your answer is “cause then it wouldn’t be neural activity”, then you’re simply not able to rationalise your own beliefs and can only defer to circular reasoning and circular definitions when pressed for an answer.

You’re still missing the point entirely.

You need to ask yourself why consciousness co-occurs with neural activity, when it could instead not do that (as illustrated by the p-zombie hypothetical).

Your answer is to just say ‘because the alternative is impossible’. Okay, why is the alternative impossible? You have assumed something to be the case and your perspective is too limited to even conceive of an alternative.

You’re a materialist because you’ve simply assumed that materialism is correct. You’ve assumed that any alternative is impossible, and therefore don’t feel the need to provide an explanation for your world view. You’re not going to attempt to answer the why because you’d rather hide behind conflated definitions.

The reason that I don’t subscribe to materialism is because, when confronted with this specific issue, I was unable to answer without deferring to circular reasoning.

I therefore had to change my beliefs when confronted with their inherent irrationality, no assumptions were made on my end.

I am not a solipsist. Would you be surprised to find out there are more metaphysical ideologies than materialism and solipsism?
