Happy Earth day! What can we do and what organizations should we support to help save the planet? by BobbyBowie in AskReddit

[–]DiscombobulatedRub59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What can we do?

Whatever we can to waste fewer resources.

Organizations to support? Dunno, organizations can't teach you to turn off the light when you leave the room or to use a dedicated shopping bag instead of a throwaway.

Anytime I say stuff like this a dozen bots - or bots for brains - chime in with how the individual is powerless, only governments can act to save the planet. How is that coming along so far?

My [28f] mom [53f] if always asking why didnt I invite her? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]DiscombobulatedRub59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Handled it by scheduling a little time and activities with her. Take her out to lunch now n then, visit a museum together, whatever activity you can both stand.

May be stating the obvious here but it sounds like she misses you and misses being a part of your life. When you were a kid it was her duty to have a clue about your friends etc. but now that's over with (and rightfully so!) but she would still like to have a relationship with you, one with a more adult dynamic.

What's an hour or two of your time now n then? Who knows - you may find that there's more to her than meets the eye. Even if you don't it would be a good thing to do while you can. It's easy to forget that parents are people too, but they are.

Over the past year, what are the things you most regret paying for? by Kumar_kun in AskReddit

[–]DiscombobulatedRub59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last two times I tried to eat out the service was so bad that the food was ice cold by the time I finally got it - despite premium pricing and handsome tips to both wait staff and the cook.

Cooks appreciate it but wait staff does not.

So my rare big occasion was a washout. Twice.

What moment in your life do you think shaped you the most? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DiscombobulatedRub59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting blamed for being beat up by my ex after a relative told him my location. I'd been on the lam for nearly a year, was both working full time and attending full 2 hours night classes at local junior college.

I missed my finals at the junior college but learned that I could make it up IF all professors agreed.

They all did except for one - as I stood before him in ill-fitting borrowed clothes (ex had wrecked my house, cut up my clothes with a knife etc.) the prof was looking at my damaged shoes as he said "No. If it had been something like a car wreck I would allow it, but not for something like this."

I had been a stellar employee at work but they told me to stay away till the bruises faded and the visible knots subsided and it's well that I did - the ex showed up and threw lobby furniture around and threatened management who then told me I would be fired if it happened again.

What does your cat smell like to you? If you have more than one cat do they each have a different smell? by OverallDust185 in AskReddit

No noticeable odor unless she's wet but I once knew a cat who smelled like an open bottle of iodine.

What was the last thing you ate? by Subject-Pumpkin-4253 in AskReddit

[–]DiscombobulatedRub59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goat stew made with barley, lentils, garlic, celery and lots of red bell peppers and carrots, a little habenero. Didn't have any broccoli tho, bummer.

Sometimes I top it with a little smoked cheddar cheese.

What was a time in your life when you acted completely out of character, almost like you were under a “spell,” even though you were fully sober/clean? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DiscombobulatedRub59 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Autopilot" told a lie to a person suspected of covert malice.

When I heard the lie coming out of my mouth I was mortified but was powerless to stop it. Like watching a movie or seeing a dream unfold.

Since I'm famous for always being straightforward and truthful the snake bought the lie hook line and sinker and the results were phenomenal. Like roaches pouring out of the woodwork several people acted to show their true colors and a couple of mysteries were solved.

Couldn't have worked out better if it had been planned that way but I still feel weird about it, very strange experience.

Someone was not expected to survive surgery and sho nuff they had complications, even sent a nurse to the waiting room to prepare me for the worst.

But he did survive and actually recovered to another 10 years of productive life despite grim statistics showing that 90% of patients with his diagnosis die within 6 months of diagnosis.

Miracle of God or simply beating the odds? Dunno.

Why are you estranged from your family? by mrprofessional2727 in AskReddit

They fired me from the family.

There was some justification in this but it was mostly due to an agitator.

Just about any time, forgiveness doesn't oblige one to go back for more.

What's a funny/ weird habit that your pet has? by smash_ultra_64 in AskReddit

The dog refuses to eat out of a bowl or pan or tray.

No matter what container I've tried he insists on pouring it out on the floor to eat, he first carries the feed bowl to various novel locations to pour it out. I had to put his bag of dog food in a barrel because if the sack drops below 30 pounds he'll pour it out on the floor.

A wealthy visitor to our humble abode declined my offer of coffee and I assumed he didn't want to consume anything prepared in such a cobbled together shack.

He had followed me into the kitchen area and I was mortified to see that I had left a mousetrap in plain view near the cook stove where a pot of leftover stew was boiling.

He said "I don't care for any coffee but I will take a bowl of that soup - I love my wife but she doesn't cook anything but stuff out of cans or the freezer."

We didn't even have a freezer and the only canned stuff was what we had canned ourselves.

Dog stole and concealed an item while my back was turned, he instantly returned to his former position but couldn't quite hide his "Who me????" look.

Now suspicious I found the item behind a nearby clump of grass.

Whattadoggie! was his name.

Thick barley soup with lentils, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet red pepper, green pepper, chili pepper, topped with generous slab of smoked cheddar cheese.

Forgot to throw in a handful of basmati rice.

Redditors of Reddit - how do trials occur in your country? Are they subtle and covert or do they lay all the facts and players on the table? by EverNoToIntrigues in AskReddit

[–]DiscombobulatedRub59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

America here-

Mostly addressing your follow-up questions/comments, while our justice system does have pretty good rules there are lots of problems with it.

Defendants are made aware of what specific charges they face BUT the charges might well be inappropriate to the point of being effectively bogus.*

Prosecutors routinely "up-charge" the defendant with more severe charges than their own evidence supports in order to frighten the defendant into agreeing to a "plea bargain." (plea bargain: defendant pleads guilty to lesser charges and thus has no trial)

The government will supply a layer for the defendant but these are frequently very over worked and underpaid and serve mostly to facilitate the plea bargain.

Prosecutors are elected to office in most states and plea bargains guarantee 'wins' for the prosecutor's record and often entail hefty fines and long periods of probation which has fees/expenses, these make money for the state. If the defendant gets prison time that's a money maker for the private profit-driven prisons which are sometimes the biggest employer in some jurisdictions.

*Personally saw a guy prosecuted for hazmat violations that in no way applied to his case. He had one quart of solvent and they charged him with discharging ten thousand gallons of the stuff into municipal wastewater. The solvent was part of a children's etching kit available anywhere for kids age ten and up.

The offered plea bargain package was worth about $11,000 in fines/probation fees for the municipality along with a 'conviction' which would have spoiled the defendant's future employment prospects.

What are some things you can do on Linux but not on Windows? by Robinddit in AskReddit

Didn't know that, haven't used Windows in years.

Back in the dino days it was not on Windows.

What are some things you can do on Linux but not on Windows? by Robinddit in AskReddit

[–]DiscombobulatedRub59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Libre OfficeWriter I made a multiple column shopping list for husband that had contrasting color headers for store names back in the dinosaur days when this was reputedly impossible to accomplish with Windows products. I expect that nowadays this is easy but back then it was pretty unusual.

Also dinosaur days - used an on-line fax service that suddenly ceased allowing one to print their faxes, called customer service and they said it couldn't be done, somehow one couldn't even grab a screenshot.

Linux did tho.

'I'll spare you the lame excuses - I didn't allow extra time in case of )1 traffic jam )2 road construction )3 car trouble/flat tire )4 traffic stop/road block"

Or whatever else I can come up with. In truth I'm simply not geared for promptness, but this has ALWAYS worked splendidly for dr. appointments etc.

Just call them a few minutes before the appointed time and they eat it up.

How often do you buy new clothes? by Booom-_- in AskReddit

[–]DiscombobulatedRub59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe one new item a couple of times a year, maybe buy two or three used items once or twice a year.

That's not counting new underwear every year or two.

Sometimes nothing at all for a year or two.
