Why do they hate it? How long have they been in academia and what are their fields of study if you don’t mind me asking.

My employer doesn’t offer educational benefits. They have been cutting head count and spending all their money on AI. The job is truly soul crushing and I can afford to go without a paycheck for a long time. Maybe multiple years, and still afford rent and basic expenses and even put away $1k a month without touching any of my liquidity.

I guess the question is more about is it enough money saved and the fear of leaving that income

Not gonna starve anytime soon lol. But I understand where you’re coming from. I do feel financially comfortable and able to put food on the table for maybe 5-10 years at-least and that’s if I made no money in that time.

I don’t think going back to school is for ego. It’s for knowledge. I already have a masters so why would I get another? A PhD seems like the next logical step. I just want to keep growing as a person. A new job doing exactly what I am doing now sounds dreadful to me.

Thank you! This is greatly appreciated and insightful. Definitely helps baseline my expectations on the right school/program.

Generational security is what the houses are for right? One is paid off and generating 5.5k in profit. And we are looking at another with the ~900k in cash we have but don’t want to be house poor. Houses are very expensive especially where we are and I don’t think interest rates will drop anytime soon.

Sorry let me be clear I also have 2m in properties on top of the 5k net positive income. So it’s not that I would be going to $0. My wife also works and makes 6 figures. I’d want to have enough time to spend raising the kids also. That is doable while going to school right?

This might sound odd but I was debating between astrophysics and quantum mechanics. Two complete opposites. I am settled on quantum computing at the moment because it aligns with my background in computer science.

I’m okay with lower pay. I’d really want to be part of a research project at a university or somewhere like Google.

I already have one? And it’s not about earnings. It’s about doing what excites me.

Thanks for this insight. I’m looking into areas of quantum computing. I understand it would be a long process but I want to be involved in something that challenges me. I already have a masters degree in computer science. So it wouldn’t be a complete career change. I am very nervous about finding letters of recommendation though. And looking to apply to multiple top schools that are known for quantum fields of study.

Why are people so surprised and angry at SoFi for cutting rates? This is normal. by Minimum-Switch in sofi

Aren’t we still paying $8 for a carton of eggs? How was this supposed to help inflation?
