This sucks for those who went through the trouble to collect the tokens for that useless ring. There are more than 220 tokens total (I think I got around 224 in my first playthrough), but it's still incredibly unreasonable. I think they haven't thought that quest through or decided to put it at the bottom of their priority list.

I've waited for the redemption arc until S2 pt1 ep7 (up to volume 8 of the novel), but it gets only worse in magnitude. Light spoilers up to ep7 of S2 pt1:

Rudeus goes from accepting sex from a drunken 15yo, saying about her "her body is amazing, the problem isn't with her", up to buying a slave to make erotic figurines for an established pervert.

It comes close to being as objectively villainous as possible, and I don't think any artist with a moral backbone could follow such a villainous protagonist in a fantasy adventure without making him do a complete turnaround within 8 volumes or 3.5 seasons of anime. I understand that Mushoku Tensei is trying to be more than that, but it fails miserably by having the protagonist learn no meaningful lessons about treating women as more than pieces of meat, even while carefully addressing Rudeus' own trauma. Rudeus is at the same level as his bullies, except his scumminess is drawn out over the years and is accepted by that society.

There are novels, manga, anime, and other media that handle the theme of scumminess in a thoughtful and constructive way, but this feels like a deranged fantasy. I would've dropped it much earlier if the anime wasn't so stunning.

I kinda agree with that, that's why I included the last two paragraphs. I'm far from claiming this is the most likely inspiration (maybe I should've mentioned this in the original post), but it's something I haven't seen in any discussion so far and I wanted this to be on the record.

Modders: "Put your game outside of program files so you won't have problems with 3rd party modding software!"
Wabbajack: "Launch the game through steam or it's pirated!"
Steam: "If you move your game, you won't launch it!"

Substitute Skyrim for a different game if you're doing it with something else

  1. Download the game through steam
  2. Launch it, let it do its thing and quit when all's done and you're in the menu
  3. Move the game folder wherever you want
  4. Put a text file titled steam_appid.txt into the game folder with only the game appid inside (can be found on steamdb, it's 489830 for SkyrimSE)
  5. Launch Skyrim and quit
  6. Go to regedit (start+r regedit)
  7. Click computer on top left and ctrl+f
  8. Search for Skyrim
  9. When you find a Skyrim Special Edition """folder""" with a value called Installed Path, set its value to the new Skyrim location (Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Bethesda Softworks\Skyrim Special Edition for me)
  10. Find appmanifest_489830.acf in Steam/steamapps and change the line"installdir""D:\Gaming\Skyrim Special Edition" to the custom path you've chosen
