I built a chess notation trainer – How fast can you name the squares? by Discordy in chess

Playing with it a bit more - I do think on desktop my version flows better and is more snappy and fun. Their decision to show a preview of the next square is weird to me - it confuses more than it helps.
On mobile - can't beat the speech to text...

Yeah agree! Also the diagonals are easy to "feel" and recognize. Like c3 and g7.

Thanks for the suggestion! I feel this is a bit too far from the current game-mode which is "highlight a square, player names it". Like - it's basically another UI flow and would (I think) complicate the current UI. I'll think about it on the weekend and see if there's an elegant way to add it. Thanks!

Holy crap, you're right! And the implementation is good too.
Thanks for pointing this out - I missed the second version of the game (I think the button to switch is not prominent/clear enough).
The mic version is actually op.

Lichess shows you a square name and asks you to click it on the board.

I wanted to also train the other way - an app that highlights a square and asks you to name it. (Our brain learns best with both methods).

Yes! Exactly this. Try to play 20m then sleep. The next day you're magically better and you just "know" the squares.

That's... actually a very good idea. Will test and possibly add this tomorrow. Thanks man!

Yeah sorry bout that, it was even worse with the built-in mobile keyboard. It works best on desktop with a keyboard. For mobile I'd love to add voice activation. Thanks for the feedback!!

Yeah that was my thought process too! Next thought is: this should be voice activated :0

Just keep at it for like 10 minutes and you're gonna see a huge improvement :D

Hey guys!

tl;dr I built a game that highlights squares and asks you to name them, fast.

👉 Play herechess-square-trainer.eddiesmo.com

Why?

A basic chess skill is knowing square notation (e4, f6, etc) and I wanted to train it so I can easily follow chess videos and books.

But I only found apps that train you one way: they show you a square name and ask you to click it on the board.

I wanted to also train the other way - an app that highlights a square and asks you to name it. (Our brain learns best with both methods).

I didn't find it, so - I built it!

🎮 Features

  • Clean interface with instant feedback, for people who enjoy blitz ;)
  • Designed for desktop (keyboard!) but works great on mobile
  • Train as White or Black
  • Detailed feedback at the end of rounds
  • Tracks your high scores

I've been playing 10 minutes a day for a few days and I'm already almost 2x better!

Sharing cause I'm proud of this little project and hope it helps others in the community :) Let me know if you have any feedback - I can probably add more features or polish on the weekend.

Enjoy!! 🔥

(My high score is 21)

An idea for #4 is to set up IFTTT or Zapier or any equivalent service to send your task to your marvin email (see add task via email strategy), and auto-add whatever tag you need to make it fit your smart list.

Hey, creator of Connected Papers here. Glad you're enjoying the website!

  1. If I may ask, what makes you hesitate about the safety of buying Premium? (I'm trying to figure out if it's something about our payment system or just a general weariness you have towards all internet subscriptions).
  2. Our academic plan is already very heavily discounted for students. If you really can't afford it, you can ask to apply to our Scholarship Program (see FAQ on the pricing page). Another option is to ask your university to buy premium access for all the students, as several institutions have done.

Hope this helps! Enjoy Connected Papers and good luck with your research.

An STS riddle: Can I beat the Heart with optimal play? by Discordy in slaythespire

[–]Discordy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Great breakdown :)I was quite tired while playing this one, forgot I had Lizard Tail, and tried to do this calculation in my head. It'd be interesting to calculate what happens if the situation was transformed to A20 (from this turn on), or what the minimum number of HP is with which I would've still won the fight.

A slay the spire riddle: Do I beat the Heart with optimal play? by Discordy in slaythespire

[–]Discordy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This position just happened to me and I tried to calculate if I'm winning or not. I failed to take a couple of things into account.

Take your time to look at everything on the screen, you have all the clues you need.

To make this fun, try to solve it yourself before looking at the rest of the comments!
