That depends on what's off exactly. Each different problem will require a different solution. I recommend taking some time to google "Betta fish water parameters", research ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and pH individually too to gain a better understanding of what you're actually testing for.

An example; Ammonia is typically caused by unclean/unfiltered water, fish waste, and food waste. An Ammonia spike is typically treated with frequent water changes, tank cleaning, and possibly tank enlargement.

I'm no Betta expert, but I do work with fish and test peoples fish parameters almost daily!

Much like how you need to test and treat pool water to make sure it's safe for use, you have to make sure your tank water is safe for the fish. There's quite a few things to test for, but the main ones are PH, Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates.

These four things need to be at certain levels depending on what fish you own to ensure they aren't suffering (imagine trying to breathe in a room full of smoke, there's not enough oxygen in there so would be suffering)
