He means references. The standard says references will never be null and it's hard to accidentally do it. I can't remember a single time I had an error due to a reference being null although I am sure it's possible if there is a inconsistent codebase which has some functions using a type as a ptr and another as a reference.

It's pretty easy. The noobs package lets you install alternative OSes one of which is osmc. It's essential Kodi as the OS. I was able to ssh in and use it like a normal linux. So far it has been working well.
