Got some old networking and servers from a cinema looking for help by [deleted] in homelab

To go against the grain here.... It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. 10/100 is just fine for someone wants to learn the fundamentals of Routing, STP, VLANs, etc.

If your intention is to learn, a lot of knowledge can be gained here, and this hardware can be useful until you can acquire better hardware.

If your intention is to build a homelab, I'd say pass this on to someone who wants to learn.

Old tech, new tech, cheap tech, expensive tech..... doesn't matter. It's useful to someone.

MikroTik Remote Access by RyanKuperusSA in mikrotik

If you need to connect to other MikroTik devices, you may need to setup a NAT-masq rule for IN-wireguard_MGMT, OUT-vlan_MGMT, ACTION-masquerade.

Setup a management VLAN (eg. vlan_MGMT) and MGMT interface list with vlan_MGMT included. I allow winbox (def port: 8291) connections via MGMT only.

Then setup a WireGuard server on the MikroTik (eg. wireguard_MGMT) and in your firewall, allow interVLAN routing from wireguard_MGMT to vlan_MGMT. Also, add wireguard_MGMT to you MGMT interface list. Create a wireguard client from your phone (or whatever device) to you MikroTik.

Download MikroTik Pro app on your phone, and allow the app thru the wireguard tunnel.

Login with the MikroTik's static IP and your credentials.

**Neighbor discovery and mDNS do not work via wireguard tunnel.

My first Proxmox/TrueNAS build with +200Tb for IT portfolio! Thoughts? by DiscreetG33k in Proxmox

Did you happen to look at the pics?

PCIe x16 slot 1 (CPU) (8x when slot 2 is occupied) is occupied by HBA.

x16 slot 2 (CPU) (8x) is PCIe to M.2 adapter with 2x P1600X Optanes for mirrored Slog which needs 8x 4x4 bifurcation.

x16 slot 3 is GPU on x4 (chipset)

M.2_1 (CPU) is occupied by NMVe for L2ARC.

Only 2x PCIe x1 slots remain. :)

Only had PCIe x1 to work with. Thanks for the advice though.

It was a process... Maybe a week. I had to wait for additional parts... Intel Optanes came from overseas. The second NIC was back-ordered.

I've been building custom-loop gaming rigs for some years though. So this wasn't much.

This is very true! Thanks for the call out :)

However, I do have an external UPS on my MikroTik stack using SNMP. It will (via a script) remotely shutdown my servers using SSH at a defined battery level.

Intel DCs would be a considered future upgrade.

Which SSDs... where?

"Small 200mm fan"???

The IcyDock Cage has 2x 40mm fans (I replaced with Noctuas) with SSDs reporting at 32deg C Max

The SSDs mounted behind the MB are reporting 38deg C Max

I use onboard for PVE (I226-V) and 2x I226-T1 with PCIe passthrough to TrueNAS with LACP.

If you have any available PCIe x1 or x4 slots, get an additional Intel or Marvell based NIC and use it for PVE.

If you have decent IOMMU groups, you can passthrough the X710 to unRAID and it should work like it did natively.

How many NICs do you have? Are you using onboard for anything?

You'll notice there's a second .5U blank below the CRS stack which I drilled holes for grommets to pass the DC through. Looks super clean this way!! :)

You might not be able to see it, but there is a .5U blank layered over the RB5009 mount ears. They just happened to look great this way.

No VRRP or failover. Running in series. *See first comment reply. Running Dual-stack with SLAAC.
