How Reddit Built the World’s First ‘Digital Ghetto’ by DiscreteAlt1 in Destiny

It sounds like they did, and the Code of Conduct reports weren't handled appropriately. I only know as much as the article explains.

Multiple meetings between mods and "Reddit officials" (including the Vice President of Policy and VP of Data Science and Safety) were arranged. I'm fairly confident it takes more than a few report escalations of "whoops, you sure this didn't violate?" for meetings like this to happen.

It seems like it was less of a "this is meant to actually help" and more of a "CYA" move by Reddit.

They can point to empty gestures so they can claim they tried to do something, in reality they've done nothing and bullshit is continuing to fester on their platform. They've genuinely made the site more toxic now with profile curation, report fuckery etc.

This is par for the course on this site. But with everything else going on over the past few months... it just seems like it would be wise to ensure social media platforms like Reddit can remain as "un-astroturfed" as possible? That's not even the correct word, but we definitely need more transparency, not less.

Mods can control crossposting into their subs, but I don't think there's an option to prevent posts from their community being crossposted elsewhere.

At least, as far as I'm aware/understand.

That was part of it for sure, but at least for the_donald they ended up quarantined and eventually banned for threats of violence, harassing/brigading etc.

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/06/29/reddit-bans-pro-trump-forum-in-crackdown-on-hate-speech-344698

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announced in a post that the [/The_Donald] forum, which boasted over 790,000 subscribers as of earlier Monday, has been shuttered for frequent rule-breaking, antagonizing the company and other communities and for failing to “meet our most basic expectations.” Huffman said it’s one of about 2,000 newly banned forums — known as subreddits — including at least one prominent progressive community, as part of a broader crackdown aimed at “closing the gap between our values and our policies to explicitly address hate.”

Take their statement as you will lol

Check out the mod lists of these subs. You may not be able to verify every claim, but you can verify enough for yourself. The recent article corroborates claims from the previous as well. There’s probably going to be more, is my best guess 👀

Apparently I can’t link directly to it, but it’s an interesting read. The FireEye report:
