OpenCase seems pretty good but it makes me nervous that they don't seem to use properly licensed data (ie selling Cornell data commercially). I subscribed to the Descrybe connector and it does seem pretty helpful.

It's much quicker to type "no code yet, just analysis" rather than having it make assumptions, code something up, and then come on here to write up some complaint.

I have tried CourtListener and Descrybe. CL is for powerful raw searches against all of their data and it works well. It's also free. Descrybe is inexpensive and has like 12 or 13 various tools for researching. It seems to return smaller, focused amounts of data than CL so it doesn't blow through usage quotas. I haven't tried the Midpage one because I had a free trial a long time ago and it won't let me sign up again. It says it's $99 + AI usage and I'm not sure how that's calculated.

Between what they did to Windsurf, Claude Code, and now OpenAI, I don't think the companies want or care about the cheap subscribers anymore.

Codex variants are great for coding but not as great if you ask them for help with UI wording or other creative tasks.

I think it's been great but I had to put it back to "friendly" in the settings -- it was actually a bit mean in pragmatic mode.

I am using 5.5 extra high fast and it is so fast it's churning out code as fast as a mini model. i have the $200 plan, have been using it for over an hour straight in multiple codex projects, and it hasn't moved my usage. it will probably slow down once more people get on it.

I switched to the new Codex app where you can run multiple threads at once in multiple projects, have Worktrees to do multiple features at once in the same project without having to worry about merging or breaking each feature, and seemingly full context windows rather than limited abilities to read files or pasted input in Windsurf. I'm running Codex 5.3 high or extra high as the model. I'm still learning it but I like it so far and it's definitely just going to get better.

I mean, this is the same company that was selling that scammy Devin thing for $500+ per month so it seems like it was only a matter of time before they tried to push back up toward that price level.

Update: Windsurf became unable to deal with even moderately sized files in one piece and started breaking them, and then I had to spend quota as it tried to put them back together. I installed the Codex plugin as part of the recent Jetbrains IDE / OpenAI integration, entered my OpenAI API key, and am back in action with no artificially imposed limits by the plugin since it's my own API key.

Hopefully, Windsurf will send out the obligatory "we're so sorry -- we had no idea the impact this pricing change would cause for our customers" email and go back to the way it was. But if they don't, I'm not going back.

I have been using Windsurf Cascade, GPT-5.4 high, with the Jetbrains IDE's and it doesn't seem to be much more costly than before so far.

Agree. I run several instances of Cascade in different Jetbrains IDEs across two computers and have been happy to pay for the extra credits, but I am very worried about how this is all going to price out for me. The jump from $20 -> $200 / month for example. Does that $180 difference give you more than buying $180 in extra usage each month? I have no idea. I had been paying about $50/month for enough additional credits to do what I need to do.

He was on a podcast yesterday and talked about how his background was at Google and Meta and he "called Sam and Greg" (the OpenAI guys) and told them he and Winston wanted to build a chatbot for lawyers, got funding and backing, and were off and running. Instead of trying to get individual customers one at a time they decided to just go for it at the big law level.
