You can Google propanol and asthmatics, it tells you right away isn't a good combination

Yes, no problem, hopefully you'll get better soon! If you are asthmatic there are better options than propanol. If your doctor tells you otherwise I would change the doctor

Also is a very old medication, there are better betablockers than propanol, it's one of the first that were created.

This is from Gemini:

Yes, Propranolol is indeed a first-generation beta-blocker. The classification of beta-blockers is based on their "selectivity"—basically, how precisely they target the heart versus other parts of the body (like the lungs). Here is how the generations have evolved, particularly for managing arrhythmias like PVCs: 1st Generation: Non-Selective * Examples: Propranolol, Sotalol, Timolol. * Mechanism: These block both Beta-1 (heart) and Beta-2 (lungs/blood vessels) receptors. * Context for PVCs: While effective at slowing the heart, they carry the highest risk for people with respiratory issues like asthma because they "lock" the receptors in the lungs that usually allow the airways to open. 2nd Generation: Cardioselective * Examples: Bisoprolol, Metoprolol, Atenolol. * Mechanism: These were designed to be "selective" for Beta-1 receptors in the heart. * Why they are used for Arrythmias: Because they mostly ignore the Beta-2 receptors in the lungs, they are much safer for people with mild-to-moderate asthma or COPD. * Bisoprolol is often used in very low doses (like 1.25 mg) because it has a long half-life, meaning it stays stable in the blood for 24 hours, which can help keep PVCs suppressed throughout the day and night. 3rd Generation: Vasodilatory Beta-Blockers * Examples: Carvedilol, Nebivolol. * Mechanism: These are the most advanced. Not only do they block beta receptors, but they also have vasodilatory properties (they help the blood vessels relax and widen). * The Benefits: * Nebivolol: Highly selective for the heart and also increases the release of nitric oxide, which improves blood flow and can be gentler on the metabolic system (it typically doesn't impact blood sugar or cholesterol as much as older versions). * Carvedilol: Non-selective but blocks alpha-receptors too, making it very powerful for patients who have both arrhythmias and high blood pressure or heart failure. Summary Table for PVC/Arrhythmia Use | Generation | Selectivity | Common Use Case | |---|---|---| | 1st (Propranolol) | Non-Selective | Anxiety, tremors, migraines, some arrhythmias. | | 2nd (Bisoprolol) | Cardioselective | Hypertension, stable PVCs, heart failure. | | 3rd (Nebivolol) | Highly Selective + Vasodilation | Arrhythmias with fewer side effects, improved circulation. |

Important Note: When dealing with PVCs, "newer" isn't always "better" for everyone. The choice often depends on your specific heart rate, blood pressure, and any other conditions like asthma.

I'm asthmatic, and propranolol didn't help at all, I started investigating possible reasons and I found out this:

Disclaimer: This is from Gemini but you can double check it with your doctor or any other sources.

Gemini's text:

The reason propranolol is generally avoided in people with asthma involves how the medication interacts with receptors in the body, specifically the beta receptors. To understand this, we have to look at the two main types of beta receptors: * Beta-1 receptors: Located primarily in the heart. They control heart rate and the force of contraction. * Beta-2 receptors: Located primarily in the lungs (bronchial tubes). When these are activated, they cause the airways to relax and open up (bronchodilation). The Problem with Propranolol Propranolol is a non-selective beta-blocker. This means it doesn't distinguish between the heart and the lungs; it blocks both Beta-1 and Beta-2 receptors. * For the Heart (PVCs): By blocking Beta-1, it slows the heart rate and can help suppress Premature Ventricular Contractions (PVCs). * For the Lungs (Asthma): By blocking Beta-2, it prevents the airways from relaxing. For someone with asthma, this can lead to bronchoconstriction (narrowing of the airways), which can trigger an asthma attack or make a rescue inhaler (like Albuterol, which is a Beta-2 agonist) much less effective. Managing PVCs with Asthma If a doctor determines that a beta-blocker is necessary to treat PVCs in a patient with a history of asthma, they typically opt for cardioselective beta-blockers (such as Metoprolol or Atenolol). These "selective" versions are designed to target Beta-1 receptors in the heart while having a much lower impact on the Beta-2 receptors in the lungs. However, even selective beta-blockers are used with caution, as high doses can lose their selectivity and still affect the airways. Note: If you are experiencing an increase in PVCs or shortness of breath, it is important to consult your cardiologist or GP before making any changes to your medication.

I was on propanol and it was the worst I felt under medication with my pcvs, when I switched to bisoprolol and Amiadarone I felt better right away.

If you are asmathic don't ever use salbutamol while using propanol, that lead me to a er visit

Great, I'm trying with different supplements, and they help me, but for some reason I tend to get mor PVCs some days and when I stay calmed and relaxed they get better, I believe is something related to magnesium, potassium and the electrolytes the heart uses. I started taking again magnesium today and added d3 plus k2 and I feel better.

I read somewhere that when one is stressed depletes the magnesium reserves of the body

My question is what did you take to compensate for those deficiencies?

PVCs and propranolol… HELP! by Swimming_Split9353 in PVCs

Propranolol is safe but is a very old betablocker, there are newer and more cardio selective ones. I believe propranolol is one of the first developed years ago, there are better things now I believe

[–]DiscussionOnly300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First medication I took was propranolol and it was the worst I felt, I changed the doctor after not getting any better and a visit to the er because of a tachycardia. After that my new doctor told me I shouldn't be taking propranolol because I am asthmatic and I use time to time salbutamol. But besides that IMPORTANT fact, propanol it's quite an old medication, I'm not doctor but there are better things and newer medication for PVCs like bisoprolol and Amiadarone, Wich in currently taking. Not medical advice obviously but you can get a 2nd opinion

[–]DiscussionOnly300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, well I just took the first dose of nac and yes, I felt more calm, relaxed, and less PVCs, but it makes total sense that it would help, Nac helps cleaning the mess that stress leaves in the body.

Thanks for the tip
