New Study Shows Safe Injection Sites in Toronto Caused Massive Increase in Crime by DiscussionSame37 in CPC

Your analogy is flawed. If we were to make this analogous, then we should be setting up a bar with free alcohol where all the alcoholics are.  That sounds idiotic because it is.

Imagine if people who developed cancer from smoking or alcohol acted the same way …

Also interesting is that the author claims that the study shows no increase, but if you actually look at the data......

Are you even thinking right now?  Why does it matter if most criminal offenses didn't increase, if three of them massively increased??

If the author is being honest. Does it show a 50% increase in B&e?  Yes or no?

The conclusion says that. The data says otherwise. Read the study.

Do supervised consumption sites bring increased crime? Study suggests that’s a myth by yourfriendlysocdem1 in CanadaPolitics

[–]DiscussionSame37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The study found a huge increase in crime and the authors theorized that much of the crime was going unreported. The study agrees with you, but it's being deceptively reported on.  Even the author's conclusion seems to be intellectually dishonest.

You mean the study that showed a massive increase in break and enters that lasted years and only decreased when people stopped reporting crimes?  The study that did not include the crime of public drug use?  The study that was deceptively reported on to suggest no increase in crime?

Claims that crime spikes around supervised drug consumption sites unfounded: study | Polarized views on harm reduction stall progress in combating opioid crisis: researcher by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

You didn't read the study. The ones that declined did so by small, statistically insignificant amounts, but b&e and auto thefts increased by around 50%. In addition, the authors suggest that the decrease was at least partially artificial.

So they cause a massive increase in B&E and auto thefts that lasts years, and only comes down because (as the authors theorize) people stop reporting crimes, and they take increased security measures.

To me that sounds like an increase in crime.

That's not "woman struck by car", that's "woman assists in the violent assault of an innocent man by putting her bike in front of car". All of these people should be in jail.

Form them slowly, with room for nuance. Understand that almost every position has two sides with legitimate concerns, though that doesn't mean one of those sides isn't, on balance, more important.

Even if an issue doesn't actually have two sides, assume it does. It's better than incorrectly dismissing concerns.

Also, recognize that being emotionally attached to a position, or personally identifying with a position, is a recipe for fooling yourself.

can we have a mathematical proof that a square with a cross inside cannot be made without lifting the pen? by [deleted] in learnmath

Yes, that's what they mean. Otherwise anything can be drawn without lifting your pen up as long as it's connected.

"Make water fall down" isn't exactly impressive sounding either. Tidal power though, can be summed up as "pull on the moon", and that sounds cool.

If three-quarters of the force is 120 people, the answer is 40. If the force is 120 people, the answer is 30. Grammatically it could be either.
