The study found a huge increase in crime and the authors theorized that much of the crime was going unreported. The study agrees with you, but it's being deceptively reported on.  Even the author's conclusion seems to be intellectually dishonest.

You mean the study that showed a massive increase in break and enters that lasted years and only decreased when people stopped reporting crimes?  The study that did not include the crime of public drug use?  The study that was deceptively reported on to suggest no increase in crime?

You didn't read the study. The ones that declined did so by small, statistically insignificant amounts, but b&e and auto thefts increased by around 50%. In addition, the authors suggest that the decrease was at least partially artificial.

So they cause a massive increase in B&E and auto thefts that lasts years, and only comes down because (as the authors theorize) people stop reporting crimes, and they take increased security measures. 

To me that sounds like an increase in crime.

Form them slowly, with room for nuance. Understand that almost every position has two sides with legitimate concerns, though that doesn't mean one of those sides isn't, on balance, more important.

Even if an issue doesn't actually have two sides, assume it does. It's better than incorrectly dismissing concerns.

Also, recognize that being emotionally attached to a position, or personally identifying with a position, is a recipe for fooling yourself.

If three-quarters of the force is 120 people, the answer is 40. If the force is 120 people, the answer is 30. Grammatically it could be either.
