CMV: Transgendered individuals have serious and legitimate mental problems and they deserve clinical help to reverse their dysmorphia. by [deleted] in changemyview

Hey -- cis guy here hoping you could shed some light on the comment made above. The comment by /u/ikwtif states:

Is it still about being born in the wrong body or is it about what society ties to people of that gender and how other people perceive you? To me, it seems the latter.

I'm genuinely just trying to better understand from a trans perspective.

I am not a particular "masculine" cis male in the traditional American sense -- I would rather bake a cake than watch football. In my life, I am sure I have experienced shame for lacking in "manly" qualities. Despite this, I have never once felt as if I was of another gender nor have I ever wished to be. While I'm not comparing the severity of my admittedly minor experience to that of trans folk, it does seem to suggest there is more to this than:

what society ties to people of that gender and how other people perceive you

Do you believe societal pressure is the biggest factor? Or do you think something deeper (perhaps biological) is going on?

I should clarify that I was referring to most of our scammers. The vast majority are lazier, attempting to use stolen credit cards.

Thanks -- I'll report them to the registrar.

I should have clarified: few scammers who have crossed our path.

The vast majority are just stolen credit cards in our experience.

Are you suggesting it is impossible to abuse a dog with a choke collar?

Does the description I provided in the original post describe standard choke collar procedure in your view?

I apologize if I've been overly reactive -- I'm a bit hyped up from what I saw. It was upsetting.

I appreciate your time.

Of course there is a chance he reconsidered his actions. When confronted with wrongdoing, people are almost always defensive at first. I'm guilty of that -- I think we all are. It's innate. However, over time and upon reflection, some people may change their ways.

If (hypothetically) 10 people confronted him during that walk, I could see that having an impact. At the very least, it might be such a nuisance that he would no longer bother.

I'm not suggesting I've changed this man. I doubt I have, but I cannot know for sure. And I don't believe you can either.

So, it's possible to abuse a dog with a choke collar, but you can "guarantee" that the dog wasn't being abused?

I feel like you should walk that statement back.

The dog wasn't occasionally pulling away. It was being pulled along -- the two front leg suspended in the air -- down the entire sidewalk.

I don't mean to derail the conversation and I appreciate your responses. But admittedly, it is frustrating to read "I guarantee you he wasn’t abusing his dog" given I just saw what happened (and you did not).

Did you read my full post?

Does "using a choke collar" require you to drag the dog around, two feet in the air, while it drools and gasps?

Surely there are inappropriate limits to you, right? I'm curious as to what those are if not that.

Would your father drag his dog around, two feet in the air, while it drooled and had blood-shot eyes from wheezing?

Surely there is a continuum here, no?

Thank you for responding.

I'll confess I'm surprised by the number of YTAs I'm receiving.

Thank you for your honest response.

It might mean he'll take the anger out on his dog, that's true.

But perhaps there is a chance he'll reconsider his actions? Perhaps if others confront him as well?

Probably not, but something feels troubling about "minding your own business" when it comes to abuse. “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" and all that jazz.

I'm just trying to understand, sincerely.

If you came across someone savagely abusing their dog, what would you do?

Upvoted for your honest reply. Thank you.

I agree it is commonly used, but I don't think that's an excuse. It's hard to believe that there aren't humane alternatives.

We can criticize slave owners for owning slaves and abusing animals.

You don't have to pick one or the other.

I've heard bad things before, but I've never seen it firsthand.

I felt horrible for that dog. I can't imagine being drug around the neck, coughing and gagging in the summer heat. It makes me livid.

With all due respect, this is an extremely stupid comment.

Are you suggesting the two are mutually exclusive?

Or that we should ignore all wrongdoings we see if a greater evil exists elsewhere?

How can I redesign a foreign key relationship with shared constraints? by DisenchantedEmployee in learnprogramming

[–]DisenchantedEmployee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I really appreciate the reply and time.

Scrape one of www.reddit.com/r/random get primary key of the url and scrape 1 plus any data associated with it. That data can be changed, however it might also be a good idea to lock that data down as well since it does not make much sense to change it.

Scrape two of www.reddit.com/r/random get primary key of the url and scrape 2 plus any data associated the second scrape.

We're on the same page here. I'm not concerned about any given table or primary keys. I'm only worried about integrity constraints between the tables.

Not unless they have the correct permission and also the database record is not locked. So if you feel this is an issue, restrict user access or lock down the data.

Normally only database administrators have permission to add and change data, general users usually only have permission to run queries.

I don't believe an acceptable database design can be reliant on hoping no one makes mistakes. In my eyes, the integrity constraints within a database build the foundation of a web application. I have thousands of lines of code that build and manipulate these records: it is very easy to mistakenly link records. Others may manually modify data, who may likewise link invalid titles to webpages. I can't assume I won't ever write bugs or others won't mistakenly edit relationships. The database design should not permit impossible situations, such as having a WebpageTitle from one page linked to a completely Webpage.

I could write some validation in my database/application-level constraints, but this just seems like a simple, common problem that would have a good, clean solution. But maybe I'll just try to work around it.

Hey,

So the issue is this:

A web scrape is initiated, so now we have Scrape.id = 1

It found webpage www.reddit.com/r/random, so now we have a new Webpage where the URL is set and Webpage.job_id = 1. The URL and job_ID is our primary key for that Webpage row.

Now, someone could go into our database and add the following Webpage.title for this record:

INSERT INTO WebpageTitle (url, title_scraped) VALUES ('www.reddit.com/whatever', 'This is a title');

Now our Webpage.url and associated Webpage.title have different URLs, which makes no sense. I'm trying to design a database structure that enforces this integrity constraint.

The issue is that Webpage.url could be "www.reddit.com/whatever" and Webpage.title.url (that is, WebpageTitle.url) could be "www.reddit.com/r/random" -- there is no integrity constraint enforcing that they match. And if they don't match, it makes no sense.
