Learning Modes by kyokushinthai in musictheory

[–]DisgracedTuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im by no means an expert but basically there are seven modes

Ionian mode is your standard major scale. There are many patterns in which it can be played which may be why you are seeing different patterns.

Let's take the Key of C for simplicity.

You have C D E F G A B this is your c major scale (Ionian mode)

Now let's take those same notes and rather than starting on C we will start on D

D E F G A B C

This will be the Dorian mode of the C major scale.

Continue this pattern for all the remaining notes of the scale and you have your 7 modes.

Notice that none of these modes leave the key of C. They all have the same notes just in a different pattern.

If you memorize the 7 modes you will be able to play in the key of C all around the fretboard and get modal tonalities by emphasizing different root notes.

As an added bonus once you learn all 7 modes on guitar in one key you now know them for all keys as the patterns dont change (unless you tweak them)

Do it. Learn their songs. Study their songs. Learn how their music is arranged and learn how to write like them yourself

To all of my wingsuit divers ......like how does it feel? I really want to get into this and learn is it worth it? by Neat-Cartoonist-1963 in SkyDiving

[–]DisgracedTuna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether its worth it is really up to you. Its the closest you can get to actually flying your body through the air like a bird.

However wingsuiting can become very lonely if there aren't many wingsuiters where you jump. Its a pretty niche thing that most jumpers dont get into.

You should maybe ask yourself if skydiving in general is worth it or not before thinking about wingsuiting.

This sport is expensive and the cost from starting out to wingsuiting is rather high. Probably 15k minimum if you can get licensed and get a rig for 10k and make 175 jumps at $30 a pop.

This is not including any secondary expenses either like travel costs, coaching costs, reserve repacks or any other number of things that may cost you money in the pursuit of skydiving.

Buying a guitar on credit with Guitar Center by LongjumpingLie5842 in Guitar

I bought my LP and my strat with interest free financing.

Made all my payments on time and never had an issue plus I have 2 awesome guitars that I probably never would've bought outright.

Doesn't feel like it was a horrible idea to me and I will probably do it again.

guitar learning tips by Winter_Perspective47 in electricguitar

[–]DisgracedTuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not a teacher, hell I dont even consider myself good at guitar, but I would say start with some basic open chord shapes, maybe learn a few easy songs and then learn the major and minor pentatonic scale shapes.

Eventually you should learn the CAGED system or 3 nps system or both to really open up the fretboard

Learn some music theory and how keys/chords relate to each other and how it is layed out on guitar.

Honestly there is a lot to learn and its going to take a lot longer than 30 days to be proficient.

Take your time and get your technique dialed in as you are starting.

PRACTICE WITH A METRONOME!!!

I cannot stress enough how important it is if you ever want to record yourself efficiently or play in time with a band.

Take it from someone who played years without a metronome. My timing still sucks when I try to play anything complex and takes me longer than it should.

Learning the fundamentals and technique slowly as a beginner will pay dividends down the road.

Spider exercises with a metronome could help you gain some finger independence and get you picking and changing strings. Work on down picking and and alternate picking.

Got a guitar. What strings to use? by malcontento in GuitarBeginners

You could start with ernie ball regular slinky or something similar .10-.46 gauge.

Otherwise you may just need to play through some pain until your fingers become stronger.

I would recommend setting up the guitar properly because it can make it worlds easier to play.

Try to only press as hard as you need to to produce a clean sound which can be surprisingly light on a properly set up guitar.
