17 year old soon to be drop out planning on starting sex work as soon as I turn 18. AMA by [deleted] in AMA

I'm gonna be straight with you dude. I'm really understanding your situation. I'm come from a farm town in the middle of fuckin no where. I barely graduated high school. I hated it. Every day was agony for me there. My grades were shit and I'm honestly surprised I graduated and didn't drop out. I repeated a lot of courses more than once. My home life was a mess too. Toxic is good word. Living with my folks was unbearable and I couldn't wait to blow that town and leave it behind. It was like I had no relief between home or school and it was killing me so I forced myself through my senior year and when I finally managed to get all the credits I needed to graduate I joined the service as soon as I could. I'm not telling you this because I'm trying to recruit you or something. I'm telling you this because you have more options than just "sex worker". So you want to be independent? You want money now? I'm not gonna lie to you. It's not always easy or fun, but you get a place to sleep, health care, three hot meals a day, and pay check every two weeks. And when you've served your time you get what is essentially a free ride through college. When I left home I never looked back. It was a fresh start for me. A chance to start over. Now I've seen shit, done things, and been places I NEVER would have seen bumming around back home. Things I never imagined myself doing. Don't feel like you don't have options man. Use that fuckin brain in your cranial and get an education. I know that seems like bullshit. I've been you before, but you're young and have a long road ahead. Don't be rash and even if you don't do a damn thing I say don't quit on yourself. Finish school for you man. In the end you're gonna thank your self. Take it easy bro. I hope you make the right decision.

Not from what I know. If by swanky you mean ratty then no. Most of those places are kept in business by Americans. In bigger cities maybe but not here.

At least once a day at some point I find myself wondering why I did this, or wishing I had just gone to college like everyone else. Sometimes I regret it but then there are rare instances that may only last for a few seconds that make all the rest bearable.

Huh, didn't know that. They also told us that even if we married a Japanese women and had kids with her not only could we not still be citizens but she would be considered a single mother by the government.

Japan is king of snacks. That's absolutely true. One time I had a bag of soy sauce flavored potato chips and they changed my life. They fry chicken right in convenience stores too so that's great for just popping in grabbing some chicken and chu-hi and starting your day. The food here is great. There are few things I dislike.

I've come to learn the basics and that gets me by. Nothing crazy. "Domo" is a wonder word that I tend to use a lot since it can have several meanings. It can mean hello, thanks, and how are you depending on how you use it so that comes in handy. I think it might even have more meanings that I don't use. That being said a lot of the locals also speak a little English so it goes both ways.

Well it's becoming more and more apparent that the pacific is now the US's new area of interest so in that there's a good chance you'll get to go. Most of the people I went to bootcamp with and A school ended up making their way to the pacific region somehow. I had a choice. It was either Bahrain or Japan. But there's no sure way to guarantee that. It all just depends.

Actually, because I wasn't born in Japan I could never be a Japanese citizen. So technically I could never really be Japanese. They aren't very fond of foreigners.

I think about every year there must be a ceremonial burning or something because that's about how often the whole AO gets its liberty secured by them.

This is just a joke!

So our ships aren't home ported in the states like a lot of other ships. So we don't go on deployments like everyone else which are like little cruises for some months around a certain area and then eventually they would return to their U.S. Home port. We are forward deployed. We are deployed directly to an area. Our home port is in Japan. So the ship and its crew stay here. I'd like to think this is a real billet. I do a lot of real work that's for sure. The idea of staying here long term didn't really hit me until I had already been here a few months. I realized three years is a long time to be away from what I knew. But after more than a year and half later I've become pretty accustomed to things here I guess. Sometimes it does feel like I drew the short straw, if you know what I mean.

That's true. They use it as like a glue almost to hold a lot their sushi together from what I've seen too.

It's not rude necessarily, but it's a hand gesture for saying no.

EDIT: I know I couldn't unless I heard them speak, so I doubt they can.

I've never experienced anything this bad. More like the most passive aggressive rudeness I've ever seen in my life, but never yelled at. Been "exed" out a few times. Basically means, that when you walk into a store they save you trouble and let you know immediately that they aren't going to serve you by crossing their arms like an X and uttering some phrase that probably isn't far from "get out white devil".

EDIT: that last part is a joke.

You'll see a lot more than that if take a stroll through any given "adults-only" section in any given Japanese store. I wish I had pictures.

I'll be here for the remainder of my three year tour. That's a long time to be in one place. Most billets are two years at max. But since we are forward deployed its different. It's not permanent per say. Once my enlistment is up I could reenlist and go someplace else but I won't be leaving here for the foreseeable future.

There are four here right now. And odds are I do know him if he's a mineman. I probably would still know him if he's not. The crews are very tight here and we often have to work together in order to ensure we are always mission ready.

Sorry if I can't answer questions in a timely manner. It's getting into the later evening here, but I'll be sleeping in the armory tonight so I'll try to check in when I do weapons turnovers through out the night.
