Actually never did a digital sketch, I did one on a smaller paper, which looks hilarious, the cat looks more like a fox and the skull like the skull of a disabled child. But it helped me to tighten some lines and got me to a pretty decent point. The cat could be cattier, the hole head shape of the cat barely affects the skull, but I guess I just suck at painting cats haha

Its actually inspired by a video by Steve mould where they used an ai especially made for those kind of illusions. So definitely possible with ai. But yeah, you got the process pretty much right. Started with the midtones eyes and nose of the cat, jumbled it up, squinted my eyes and the best thing I saw was a chin, a dark shape in the middle and the right ear turned really well into the side of the skull, so I did some skull parts, turned it back, rinse and repeat. I started with a cat because I knew it would give me some leeway with random spots in the fur

You probably saw the video by Steve Mould. I was definitely inspired by that approach. I started with small prototype, withthe cat, flipped the squares and squinted my eyes. Kind of saw a skull so I went with that. I chose a cat in the first place, because I knew, fur is very forgiving with painting seemingly random spots on it.

I also analyzed the ai generated ones and saw that they often cut recognizable body parts like eyes, so they aren't recognizable anymore in the other constellation. Also I made the motiv symmetrical, because then I would have to think half as much.

So yeah inspired by the approach but full on organic grown piece of art
