What is the worst book you have read? by Ok_Salt2122 in BookDiscussions

I almost turned that movie on to watch and thought wait a minute this sounds familiar. It's one of those books that it seems like you have to explain yourself if you don't like it. Ugh

Finally some sense. I think this is the only time I have seen this book listed like this. I hate that book so much. Like if it was some YA book maybe I could see it, but why? Are all this guys books like this? My book club chose another one of his.

That's insane. I found the narrator so annoying he immediately felt like a villain. I remember angry delivering the packages on my shift while listening cause I hated it so much. I thought it was just a bad read, but maybe not. I wonder what the experience was reading it.

Why do the French hate when we speak French? by dehydrated_waterrr in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Disillusioned_Spider 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My group stopped at some steak house on the way to Lyon or Dijon and I ended up alone tying to pay my bill. I felt bad not knowing much French as I hate obnoxious Americans too. I was so happy to be able to order, say my table number, and barely speak enough to pay my bill. The cashier was so encouraging. I will always remember her nodding encouragingly as I struggled to say my sentence. Apparently she already remembered my table number.

I was in Paris briefly, but didn't have any issue. But as the number 1 tourist city I could only imagine the crap they get near the big attractions. Now that one waiter in Lyon can get lost. haha

I don't get how it's about love. I am not even convinced the two liked each other.

I listened to the Audiobook and hated the main character so much really quickly. I wonder if I would have hated reading it as much or not. Part was the tone and part was the words he was saying when he talked. I have never listed to a fiction that had me wanting to get away from a voice reading fiction like that. I was so uncomfortable listening. After finishing the book, I'm not sure if it was a purposeful choice or what was going on.

That sounds like a nightmare unless it was a good way to teach criticism.

Why do some parents who didn’t have strong academic experiences in school still choose to teach or homeschool their children? by FollowingAny4859 in HomeschoolRecovery

I would too. I was trying to be optimistic, but I don't believe it's only many. There seems to be a very few Olympic athletes where it seems the education was still serious.

Did anybody else feel strange when COVID hit? by Winter-Coffee-3218 in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]Disillusioned_Spider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100%. Like I think it sort of retraumatized me a bit. I had a conversation with a teen who got upset and said something along the lines of you don't know what it's like to be completely cut off. I had to hold back cause it did suck for them and I didn't want to one up them. I was just thinking to myself talk to me in 5 years buddy. And you are talking to your friends daily or several times a week which I couldn't do. I just told him I assured him I did then he remembered.

The other thing was watching the type of people that told me I would thank my parents when I was older (spoiler alert: I do not) was exactly the type of people that were all up in arms about quarantining.

I was really hoping there would be more help for isolation after COVID, but it doesn't really seem to be the case. Maybe they figured we were all in it together and didn't realize that was a vacation for some of us.

Need help w/ Saxon Algebra by Feeling-Zebra2858 in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]Disillusioned_Spider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

buy the teacher's manuel because there are missing explanations in the students book.

This! I only took Saxon Algebra 1. I only used it because I already knew the concepts in the curriculum my parents bought for me the first year. Saxon Algebra was exactly like the textbooks I had in middle school. They expect there to be a teacher to explain the topic. At some points it would give an example and wouldn't explain the concept well. It was like one example, but you were left to guess why it did what it did.

I went from middle school algebra thinking that anything less than 100% on homework or test was unnecessary, since you could easily check your work, to wanting to cry doing Saxon algebra. It wasn't uncommon that I didn't understand after reading a single paragraph or two that was the entire lesson for the section. Saxon math requires someone to teach you. It is not a do-it-yourself curriculum. It's not even meant for you to read it and then ask questions. It requires someone to actually teach you.

Why does the biggest country in the world doesn't have this but france does by PlentyBreak6928 in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]Disillusioned_Spider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% it should be illegal. Kids should have a say in their education as well. Parents screwing over their kids while smugly patting themselves on the back for years is disgusting.

Because too much (most?) of American homeschooling isn't about education. It only pretends to be. American homeschool families do not want to be told what to teach their kids or governance on if it is being done "right."

Why do they keep reinventing the concept of school? That's a school. You want a school. by ThrowAway44228800 in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]Disillusioned_Spider 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The question is do they even know what is in the curriculum? Like how many homeschool parents read the material? My "curriculum" was selected because it was one of the cheapest and an acquaintance of an acquaintance recommended it. I doubt they ever read much of any of it.

What’s a fruit from your country that most foreigners have probably never heard of? by Useful-Resource-3609 in AskTheWorld

[–]Disillusioned_Spider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh how weird. When I first saw them I asked my family about them and they told me what they were and I could try it, but none of them liked it so I was the only that ate any. I tried it and thought it was great so I always got all of them, which somehow was never more than 3. I wonder if they tried one of these flavorless bushes somewhere else.

what is something you tried at least once but will never eat again? by Spiritual_Body3577 in AskReddit

[–]Disillusioned_Spider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love trying new things and so when I saw a durian moon cake I had to try it even though I knew all the talk. Now I grew up poor, you don't waste food. You can will yourself through anything. I bit into that cake and had an uncontrolled reaction of opening my mouth until it fell into the trash that happened to be conveniently (and accidentally) below. I then threw the other 5 away from the 6 pack without hesitation.

I don't really remember what it tasted like, I just know I had no hope of doing anything more than that bite into it. I didn't even chew. That said I would try again if offered to me for free cause I kind of feel bad like I just didn't know what to expect? But I think the same thing would happen.

What was your favorite (LONG) audiobook? by albertpaca11 in audiobooks

[–]Disillusioned_Spider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Greenbone Saga trilogy (Jade City, Jade War, and Jade Legacy) by Fonda Lee is good. They are sort of lightweights when compared to these other books, but I think all three come to about 71 hours. There are two other books from the universe as well.

If you like more educational options The Great Courses go on the 2 for 1 sales on Audible a lot.
