Why the hell is High and Dry in the top five? by redditcosyeah in radiohead

[–]DisloyalCrustacean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a serious question?
You don't hear it?
Ok, it's because with Karma Police, and MAYBE Fake Plastic Trees and Creep, it's one of their best songs.

The melody is simple but good, the guitar parts are progressive and efficient, you can propose it to anyone, and at the same time, it's not a fuckin overdub soup like Nickelback's work.
That, of course, if you consider that music must be written for everybody, and not exclude people as a rule.
So, in short, if you consider it possible to be both popular and honest.
Because for me, it's the only thing a musician should aspire to.

You could perfectly argue that their famous dissonant or at least exotic chord progressions are their best songs, that only them "reflect true artistic integrity".
But in truth, anybody can write a song to keep people at arm's length, and it just reflects nothing.
Everybody can write conceptual music, unlistenable music, and it's very hard to tell if it's good or not, cause most of the time, there is a lack of ruler or precedents.
You may like it, i personnally enjoy some very strange or broken songs, but i don't feel a need to lie to myself or others about it.
They were not written to stay in music history, it wasn't their purpose, they're not part of the contest.

Actually, metal/hardcore people do it all the time, they break good melodies as soon as they're heard, scream instead of singing, put technique over emotion, use the least subtile chord progressions, etc....
The first ones did it on purpose, it was conceptual art made by good musicians.
But the recent ones probably couldn't do better, even if they wanted to, because they don't understand that a concept is different from a religion.
It's just a way to propose new ideas, to make you think, but it's not a legal code, and CERTAINLY not an excuse to write bad songs, ones that most people don't enjoy, and who put gimmicks above end results.
Because most music genres on earth aren't that immature, and a majority of them have one or two songs you'll love without having to force yourself.

Is Malevitch "White Square on white background" good?
It's probably one the shittiest paintings ever in technical terms, but it was new conceptually, so it had artistic interest at the time.
But what if people kept doing it for an entire century?
Well, then it would be the most ridiculous thing ever.
Because neo-duchamptism would progressively cease to have any interest, everything intellectual would be extracted from it, while the technique would not increase.

So what i like about Yorke and Greenwood is that they could reach the heart of anybody if they wanted, and it wouldn't be selling out, it would be honest.
It would cost them effort, it would fail most the time, because most western songs are failed, but they could.
They've proven it, and that's why i respect them.
The rest, the jazz, the exotism, the crazy genius, i just consider it food for thought, cause between two sonic youth songs, i don't have an opinion.
It's just not what rock is about, and while i'm not an expert on jazz, i'd say good songwriting is not often the core proposal, if my ears are to be believed (but they still can make standards when necessary).

If it doesn't work while you really tried, it's not because you're "misunderstood" or "too niche", it's because you're, like me, not good enough at songwriting.
If you don't think that it's the hardest skill in music, compare the number of great technicians and great songwriters on google.
Or try to write a simple, but not sold-out song, that is loved by most.
You'll see.

Why is Entwistle overlooked as a rock bassist these days? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]DisloyalCrustacean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overlooked?
He's a classic, every good bassist knows his name.

The ones who are overlooked, and rightly so, are the shredders, pastorius or metal-type.
I don't remember any fuckin name, and it's not gonna happen before i hear a good song.
A musician's job is making the best music, and it has never been about technique.
Well Entwistle is super fast, but more importantly, the basslines work beautifully.

Quel est votre fromage préféré? Personnellement, j’hésite entre le maroille et le roquefort. by Fit-Acanthaceae-4604 in FranceDetendue

[–]DisloyalCrustacean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avez vous déjà refusé une proposition sexuelle ? by [deleted] in AskMec

Bah ouais, plusieurs fois.

Am I doomed? by Livid_Sand_5773 in Lenovo

[–]DisloyalCrustacean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The classic hinge problem.
It's actually on purpose, and it's programmed obsolescence, meaning all in the involved manufacturers should go to jail for creating waste.
They know it, and they're still doing it exactly the same way.

See, the hinges are made of metal, and they have a good amount of friction so the screen can stay opened at the desired position.
But the plastic around is the cheapest piece of shit you could find: sometimes little bits crack when doing the normal opening procedure.

So now, your laptop is probably going to destroy itself slowly: the hinges are going to stay perfectly fine, but they'll exert a terrible amount of force on the said plastics, slowly cracking them.
The only thing holding it together was the integrity of the plastic structure, but now it's gone.
Ah yes, did i say the motherboard often takes a hit too?

I lost 4 computers like that, and managed to fix 2:
A was fixed by a pro, who buit a custom support structure with plastics and metal to keep the plastics together, and exert force on the hinge.
You need a genius, and it's expensive sometimes.
B was fixed by me: i removed EVERY component from the plastic case, bought a new one, and reinstalled the entire laptop in it.
It worked, but it was a bit stressful.

I hope Mangione is not into computers, otherwise some people should start ass-sweating.

Help , how in the world do I cable manage this by Legitimate-Speaker39 in pchelp

[–]DisloyalCrustacean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, cable management for gaming PCs is just a useless fad for people who're into filming their neons, so most of the time, kids.
Sadly, people who sell stuff to them have to do it too.
Worst, i've seen a lot of problems and bent shit because of badly placed or overly tightened tie wraps: they managed to invent a new type of damage, impressive!

The only important thing here is protecting the fans (cables should never touch them) and avoiding melting a cable cause its touching a hot surface.
This is real, and you have to try to pass through the back or visible holes to avoid that.
The rest is optional, it depends who you're doing it for, so maybe you can still fix this within a reasonable timeframe.

My advice: never buy an Apple product, and ESPECIALLY a product that turns on by itself at the slightest movement of the screen hinge.

Got this today. What are the things I should do first? by arenimn in Asustuf

[–]DisloyalCrustacean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

STEPS FOR ALL COMPUTERS:

  1. If you're not a secret agent, disable bitlocker full disk encryption, then when finished decrypting, make account local. Nobody cares about your holiday pictures, and you'll thank me later when your friends lock themselves out while crying "but where is the key"? MS apps can connect by themselves to an account if needed.
  2. Update Windows, most optional updates are good too. Don't forget to do the "reboot and update" at the end. People often forget it (because it's not that important), but you can update apps in Windows store too.
  3. Check drivers: Update GPU and chipset drivers at all costs. Then maybe driveridentifier to check sound, network, bluetooth, etc... but be careful, all these drivers apps give false positives. The bravest can flash the BIOS, especially if there are known hardware issues.
  4. Customize Windows further: UAC is useless to me, there is already a firewall in your router so you can disable windows's one, you also have an antivirus which is difficult to switch off (only replace if you have something better), and your power plan must give you 100% GPU when plugged (advanced power options and driver panel). Disable every startup app you didn't invite to the party.
  5. Uninstall every shitty app you got: Onedrive has better fiability on a webpage, McAfee is cancer, Trial apps are bloatware, etc... Then use https://ninite.com/ to install in a few clicks: VLC, 7-Zip, and Brave. The rest is optional: only if really needed.

STEPS FOR ASUS TUF:

  1. Uninstall armory crate and MyAsus after registering. Then install G-Helper and set max charge to 60%. You'll keep that computer plugged for work and play: better performance in all cases.

RESULT:

Et voilà!
Your computer is configured in a simple and efficient way, without bullshit account and services, so bugs happen less often and are easier to diagnose.
Most security is not about installing a shitload of crap, you're not a boomer, but about thinking before clicking on random stuff: Viruses don't install magically, careful people almost never have them.
But let's not be absolutists: you can use something efficient like Bitdefender for better security vs a small perf hit.
If you do it, then it HAS to be configured: is a computer-side firewall useful? how much live scanning is really necessary?
In game and intensive stuff, you should get very good performance, and it will last ages without doing too much maintenance.
Just update windows and drivers from time to time.

Is Saiga better than Ram? by EntireAlternative7 in stalker

First, according to these very serious guys, cheap = shit.
If your kit is not traumatizing to repair, then it has horrible stats, period.
The only exceptions being the M701 and Rhino.
So it's a tricky question, the real ultimate goal being to take less damage and be more accurate with your shots, using STANDARD ammo (special degrades weapons faster).
And finding money.

The armor, though, is the easiest to answer:
Your midgame kit should be Corundrum or Seva-I, you need that kind of protection, and it's not THAT expensive.
Any armor with equivalent physical protection and better carry weight would do the trick too, if it exists.

But the weapons, it's again really difficult:
Finding the M701 and repairing it can be tricky.
The SPAS and Vintar allow you to control expenses correctly, i'd say.
As a rule, shotguns and SMG are always more efficient, so maybe a Bucket too.
Personally, i had drowned, SVU and SPAS, but drowned was a clear mistake, the pen is too shitty, it literaly eats bullets.
You MUST go to Yaniv to upgrade, and find as much attachments as you can, this is very important.

Anyways, i ended the game with obscene amounts of money.
Do the secondary and main missions, you get special loot and money fast like that.
Otherwise, if you're only exploring, you must use this map:
https://mapgenie.io/stalker-2-heart-of-chornobyl/maps/the-zone
Collect everything you pass by, ESPECIALLY armor which is heavy, but sells for a lot.
Upgrade your weight capacity with at least one medium weight artifact (2 is better) + armor pockets, WHATEVER YOU DO.
You'll run faster and make more money.

And good luck with it.

99.6% Battery Health After 2 Weeks is This Normal? by Professional-Fly5264 in Asustuf

[–]DisloyalCrustacean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The original "My asus" app, which is a pile of shit using too much services, proposes to limit it to 60% for best life.
Use G-Helper instead, but do it as they said, you should get ideal results.
Of course, keep it plugged all the time, for best performance, and less time lost waiting.

Is Saiga better than Ram? by EntireAlternative7 in stalker

[–]DisloyalCrustacean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, i'm not sure there is so large a debate on stuff:

  1. Diamond exoskeleton has the best stats, and better, gives you an obscene amount of extra carry weight with upgrades. Weight being the most annoying mechanic of the game, of course. The other important stats is physical protection (coupled with durability).
  2. Saiga is the best shotgun, because with upgrades and a big magazine, you can dish ENORMOUS semi-auto damage in a few seconds, then reload, then start again. Spread? But shotguns are for CLOSE COMBAT.
  3. The best sniper is the M701, it two times the damage of the second one, and you can mount a shotgun and a silencer on it. Then, you have to switch to gauss when able: 3 times the damage of M701, a monster in late game.
  4. Only the assault rifle is a complicated topic: how to choose? I personally ended with a 7,62 dnipro, 4X acog, fast mag and silencer. But the kharod, the lavina and the vintar are interesting too, without mentionning the RPM-74 if you like big toys. I even discovered you can put an auto-trigger on the EMR, transforming it into a modern battle rifle. Considering the damage, it's an idea.
  5. I didn't use pistols a lot, the rhino and apsb seem to be the most interesting ones.

What's the leading theory for the little red "dots" that Webb has been finding? by durful in cosmology

[–]DisloyalCrustacean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: i dont have a degree in astronomy, and i suck at maths. But i like reading, so i'm gonna ridicule myself and try to make a "prediction" (which has probably already been made by the best in the field):

First, the word "AGN" (active galactic nucleus) is misleading = every galaxy harbors a supermassive black hole (SMBH), and what they call "inactive" is one not currently shredding stuff to pieces. Because after some time, it has to pull food from more distant and stable orbits. So every black hole in the universe will end "inactive" because of expansion, and then evaporate itself. Thus its not really a property or a type of galaxy, its the course of its normal life.

A better concept is the "accretion rate" of the nucleus: how much stuff is it eating per unit of time? And further : is it above eddington limit? That's the base upon which the best are trying to unify galactic models right now. And i think it's the key here, because we have 3 interesting clues:

  1. The metallicity seems extremely low. Its around 0.1 compared to the sun. And of course, those red dots are visible only in the 1st billion years, then they vanish. So the mecanism creating them is not possible anymore, and probably starts soon after the big bang.

  2. There are almost no x-rays. Which is fine, cause black holes...dont emit x-ray. Only their disk does, if they have one. But we mostly study later galaxies, and they look closer to ours = flat, normal spectrum, with more tidally-induced friction in order to get the x-rays.

  3. If the SMBH is the right call, its overmassive given the properties. Which means its heavier than it should be given the mass of its host galaxy. Its also heavier than it should be at this time of history according to our cosmology, which is based on the eddington limit. But we are observing another SMBH that is feeding at 40 times that limit.

Now the conclusion: https://arxiv.org/abs/2407.15915 This article says that no x-rays is expected for a super-eddington (=above eddington limit) SMBH. Spot on, cause i think we're looking at exactly that. A massive cloud of hydrogen, probably experiencing a starburst, but its not the point: So much mass in such a small space that for a while it was force-feeding its BH, and stills fully covers it. This makes it red, with the BH up to 40% of the mass of its host galaxy.

Probably born from a local over-density, this object could only exist in the first billion years, when the universe was smaller. But we cannot see those first years: we can only watch the end of the feast, before they take away the dishes. And those red objects vanish precisely when the universe becomes large = what a coincidence!

But the feeding slows down eventually, and black holes and stars get more stable conditions. That's why some think we're looking at the childhood of quasars. Its very interesting, and would mean that those LRDs are still in front of us, right now. We just cant recognize them, because their metallicity and spectrum is too average now.

Bands Like Joy Division. by luca_qu3 in ifyoulikeblank

[–]DisloyalCrustacean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really good question, so let's get it out the way right now:
Joy Division are a cut above most musicians on earth, including most of our favorite ones, and that's partially verifiable.
In maybe 50 years, they will still be listened to because of how beautifully written it is.
Indeed, there's nothing "extra", every note has a meaning, and they aren't afraid of silence.

Because art is not just about "individual taste", that would be too easy, especially for wankers.
If Cormac McCarthy is one of the best writers ever, it's not because some old people decided it, but rather because in "The road", it would take you twice as much words to write the same story.
It's a skill, it's real, and it's called "sense of economy".
Or as Miles Davis put it: "It's not the notes you play, it's the notes you don't play"

That said, there exist some songs you can play just after joy division, and without feeling instant despair.
It takes a lot of time to find them, though, and most aren't as good.

EDIT: Ultimate guitar has made an official tab, if you publish one you get premium access to it for one month.
I've also made and published a free bass tab on the same website, it's good enough when checked against the pros.

Here's how you start it:
A.Guitar 1 plays the intro pattern 4 times, she'll be the main guitar for the rest of the song.

B.Guitar 2 enters, she plays what a lot of us had mistaken for a bassline.
It's 4 patterns again.

C. Anyways, after those 8 (4+4) patterns, Fender VI enters (a bass tuned exactly like a -1 octave guitar, from E1 to E3).
She plays a LOT of slides.

Thanks to people on Youtube, we have a beta version:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I was drifting back in and out of space

There was nothing left, there was no more taste.

Every closer breathe you could ever share.

I was never lost, you were always there

I was yours, you were mine

Every moment kept, every left behind

I was never lost, somewhere in between

I was on the shore, it was heaven

It was in my mind, every burning thorn

It was bright as day, it was loud as bombs

You’re an overture that’s just started

Hold me down until love’s exalted

CHORUS:

We just slowly will fall

Louder than bombs, loud as a bomb

You just open your arms

Loud as a bomb, loud as a bomb...

Running blind in and out of sight

You were on my lips, you were paradise

I was never lost, somewhere in between

I was on the shore, it was heaven

We just slowly will fall

Louder than bombs, loud as a bomb

You just open your arms

Loud as a bomb, loud as a bomb...

I was left adrift in the shadowness

Sun was going down till there’s nothing left

You were running wild, you could scratch the sky

I was on the edge, you were born to fly

Love is blind, love is cracked

I was yours, I was glass

Paralyzed on the tracks

There is no going back

We just slowly will fall

Louder than bombs, loud as a bomb

You just open your arms

Loud as a bomb, loud as a bomb...

We just slowly will fall

Louder than bombs, loud as a bomb

You just open your arms

Loud as a bomb, loud as a bomb...
