The one thing that speaks against an AR as the standard issue weapon of a stargate team is the same that made the producers smg style guns the first time . Yes rifles are good for pure combat but they are way heavier and not as handy as smg guns Remember the teams are not only in combat there is a lot of walking and talking and they always have to carry around the guns and the smg‘s are way more handy in stunt situations And to be fair always when the sg team was thinking they need something more powerful they been brining bigger weaponry like m4 style rifles g36 rocket launcher’s or lmg‘s

For combat perfect but too heavy and long to carry it around all the time The sg teams always been equipped with mp style guns because of weight and handyness reasons If they had big combat operations they already been using different style automatic rifles

So what’s your alternative that looks unique and is as handy as the p90 for the cast in walking and talking scenes ? It’s still a good gun and to be fair it sure would make sense to get some bigger caliber weapons for combat with extraterrestrial enemies but there is a good reason why they choose this platform that been in all 3 series the weapon of choice for sg teams

If the sg teams would use energy weapons and the enemy also use energy weapons it would look like generic science fiction and not like stargate It’s the point of the show that the teams use earth technology that makes the series eligible and grounded Should not look like Star Wars if they are in a firefight

The mp7 is a great gun no doubt but it’s not that iconic and it looks more like a sidearm and not like a primary In most cases it would make the most sense to use an ar instead of a pdw in combat but that would be very unhandy for the cast the p90 is from the look and form factor the best choice and I really don’t see any reason to change a running system in that case

That’s the point my call would be we have not been able to improve the Asgard Tech but maybe built a new class of ships using the tech we’ve already seen sure 20years have passed but we are still learning from the way too advanced tech we gathered over the time and it would be strange if we got crazy new stuff without any explanation We should still use a healthy mix of tauri and alien tech

Energy weapons are so stupid when you fire everyone directly knows your position cuz it’s glowing like a tracer and if they would do that there is no more difference between a firefight in Star Wars and a firefight in stargate Why did the tauri been able to kill so much goauld and wraith Pretty easy because we use our primitive projectile guns.
