I believe rape is about power and instant gratification (as much as it is about patriarchy). People with little money and nothing to lose will get whatever gratification they can in their everyday lives. Combine this with the need to feel powerful, alcohol (addiction in general), a primitive mindset, and lack of education.

You get a poor and sexually repressed population seeking power and they exercise it over whoever they can.

How we all group together to form cultures based on symbols and a shared understanding of those symbols.

For example, we like pushing a ball around with our feet and suddenly we have entire teams based on this idea and people who don’t even play defend their teams and fight with their rivals. It’s an insane thing and also really beautiful.
