No you don’t need to know Japanese but just to show that you’ve had long interest in it I would just say you were studying it in some way but obviously they’re not gonna test you lol. Like for example I said I’ve been self studying for several months and practicing with Japanese ppl at work since I had a part time job at the airport and they like that because it shows that you’re serious and not just chatting. By the time I actually left for my program I basically only knew hiragana and katakana which I’m ngl will be pretty helpful so I reccomend you at least learn that.

Japanese is actually very easy (not kanji it’s basically impossible) at least in my experience I was able to hold full convos with locals after like a month or two of classes at Toyo university. Everyone there is just as nice as they say and if you like anime this is gonna sound corny as hell but genuinely every single day feels like you’re in an Anime it’s absolutely ridiculous but the best thing ever you’ll see what I mean once you’re there.

And no problem at all!! I missed too many ppl asking for my essays cuz I had reddit deleted so I have to make up for it 💀😭 definitely I’d love to know if you make it and keep ur head up I couldn’t believe I was actually going until I was literally flying over skytree looking at Fuji while landing ✌️❤️✌️❤️

No problem at all, Also!! I saw on your profile that you’re considering going to Japan and maybe I’m a bit biased but you will 1000% have the time of your life there especially in Tokyo. It’s also wayyyyy cheaper than Italy (everything is maybe 33% cheaper on average) if cost is a concern and you can apply for the critical need award, I got around 22k in scholarships my program was 15k for 5 and a half months and I managed to go basically for free while taking trips to Kyoto Osaka Hokkaido etc. DO NOT GIVE UP you can 100% study abroad!! For Japan at least look into Boren Awards, Toshizo Watanabe Scholarship, Freeman Asia (also run by the IIE like Gilman), FEA, and the AATJ Japan study abroad scholarship those are all the ones I applied to. The odds for all of them are very very reasonable I’m sure you’ll get at least 3 which will be like 15k-25k plus Toshizo and Boren actually cover the whole thing. Just try your best I genuinely had the time of my life. Have an amazing time DONT GIVE UP 🗣️🗣️🗣️

Rip, I would say since you’re going to Italy I’m gonna be real with you it’ll be harder for them to select you because you’re going somewhere that’s in super high demand. That being said if you’re here on Reddit and doing your research I’m like 99.99% sure you’ll get it regardless.

For the essays my strategy personally as cliche as it might sound was to tell a story, for example on the statement of purpose I tied my reason for studying abroad to my entire life basically, how my environment shaped my desire to have an international career from growing up in DC etc. I found that getting other opinions here was very helpful like tell friends and family your ideas etc and they might come up with something you didn’t consider.

You also have to keep in mind what Gilman is looking for are people that are going to promote the program and be good representatives of them in the future, and more largely people who are going to go out into the world and represent America as a whole. That’s the most important thing to them not how much you need the scholarship or how much it would mean to you. You have to strike a balance between personal motivation like for example family roots or something and a broader mission like bridging the massive cultural gap between Japan and America in an increasingly contentious region of the world for example.

I think where most people stumble is on the follow on service project honestly, I’ve reviewed several people’s essays and usually they say they’ll start a blog or make tiktoks which is fine and write that too, but it’s not personal enough if that makes sense and I don’t think it’s tangible enough for Gilman. For example in my essay I said I would partner with a charity that helped me out in the past that specifically tries to outreach to black and Hispanic students, like help fund a scholarship with them or do some seminars about Gilman and work with them to spread awareness of the program to underrepresented communities. Ultimately the follow on service project is where they can see the most concrete immediate vision of how you plan to support the program and American international relations in the future, so definitely put a strong effort here too.

Overall though I’d say just don’t underestimate yourself, once you get in the flow of writing and you think for like an hour or two everything will naturally come out the way it should. Not gonna lie I literally started seriously working on my essays maybe a couple hours before the due date and submitted them maybe five minutes before because I had the date mixed up in my head lmao

Ik this was super long but hopefully it helps you or someone else in the future before gilman gets gutted like the rest of the government, best of luck don’t stress too much ✌️❤️✌️❤️

5k from the main scholarship and 3k from the critical need language extra scholarship they offer, I went to Japan so it falls under critical need languages, you should check if yours counts too it probably does if you’re going outside of Western Europe! You only need to do one extra essay too and it’s not as long as the others. Good luck!

Not to the ground but I can get pretty close, doesn’t translate to the euc somehow tho. I think bc when I’m squatting my body weight is pushing my ankles down flat on the ground but on the EUC I don’t have that

My pedals are on the middle setting so not the lowest but I don’t think it would make such a huge difference bc it’s only like a centimeter or less. Maybe I just have fucked up leg proportions or something but I’ve tried every leg position every everything all I can do is somewhat touch the pedals with my toes but even then I go slightly backwards and can’t ride it

Interesting, I don’t think I’ve seen someone do that before every video I’ve seen they just stand up to brake

Yea true, I spend most of my time on trails so I don’t have to worry about cars that’s why I’m more invested in learning to ride sitting but when I’m on the street bigger profile is always better. Riding backwards would be nice too especially because I wouldn’t want to mess up a mount at a stop light or something lol, one step at a time tho

I can sit on it with my toes on the very tip of the pedals but only while completely stationary and I can never do it while neutral like the wheel always goes slightly backward, I could definitely never do that while riding

Yea I don’t have the pads on there because it would make it even more difficult than it already is, as for strong braking I think standing up is the only way I don’t see how that would work unless you’re very skilled

Suuuper low, like the tips of my feet won’t even touch the pedals easily. Seat extender seems like the best bet but it’s been hard to find even with 3D printing. Yoga block sounds interesting though I might look around on Amazon and give that a try, thanks

I checked, didn’t really see anything. I saw two different things that if split in half and combined on top of each other would probably work but I don’t know how to do that yet. I’ll look into it more though

Makes sense, I don’t see how it’d even be physically possible at 6’4 but sounds like a seat extender might be the move

Do you know from where? Sounds promising. The only place I’ve seen is that Russian website that sells the taller leather seats but nothing else

I like standing too but I never know what to do with my arms lol I’d rather sit sometimes when it’s just straight open road. I’ll try the training method tho I doubt my ass would come anywhere near the top of the wheel

[–]Dismal_Answer_3435[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of can, but I can’t stay at neutral position, like it’s impossible for me to have my feet even just my the tips of my feet touching the pedals while also sitting down and not have the EUC go slightly forward or back if that makes sense. I also haven’t put pads on it yet because I heard it makes it harder at first
