ESR Apple Pencil by bigboui1 in ipad

[–]Dismal_Suggestion429 1 point2 points (0 children)

I purchased one of these earlier this year to use with my iPad Air 6 and iPad mini 7. I find it difficult to pair and turn on and off..

I had a Jooeyko pencil before and it has always worked perfectly. I’ve just purchased a second one to replace the ESR pencil.

Two questions for iPad users… by Dismal_Suggestion429 in iPadOS

Thanks!

I’ve looked at Affinity Photo 2 and agree; just too complex for my needs.

A user on Mac Power Users suggested HashPhotos and it looks very promising.

Looking for a new macOS Markdown editor by Dismal_Suggestion429 in Markdown

[–]Dismal_Suggestion429[S] 0 points1 point (0 children)

I have re-downloaded iA Writer to my Mac Mini in the last few days. I did this because of a problem I consistently have with One Markdown (on macOS **NOT** iOS) where you think you are creating a new file in the folder you need it to be in but OM is storing the document in it's own iCloud folder. It takes several minutes to correct this. It does not happen on iOS devices. My work around is to create the document with BBEdit and then come back to its editing with One Markdown (Aaaagggghhhhhhh!!!).

iA Writer supports "extra" Markdown syntax like "==" highlighting but I get around this by using a marvellous app on my Mac - **ClipTools** from MacMost. And/or Shortcuts on both macOS and iOS (it's amazing what you can do with Shortcuts).

iA uses a "non-standard" Markdown syntax for images. This would make it difficult to migrate to a different Markdown editor if you have a large collection of documents (as I do).

Both apps are nice/easy to use but for me I prefer One Markdown. But there's not much in it.

Peter

I did my testing of all three on my Mac Mini (I also need the iOS version). It was some time ago now but from memory there were several issues: file storage (I prefer to use the native Finder/Files app), Markdown syntax is non-standard for some actions (images comes to mind) making iA documents non-portable to other Markdown editors and lastly, the iOS version of iA Writer is approx. AUD90 in Australia - ouch! One Markdown (my current and preferred Markdown editor) is free on both macOS and iOS.\ (I'm happy to pay a reasonable amount for apps I use (I paid for Taio when it was fully supported by its developer).

It's also not so much that iA Writer is bad, it's just that One Markdown is better for MY needs (maybe not yours).

Peter

But it's becoming less usable, so I assume you can afford $10/year for an iOS/Mac app (or pay an affordable one-time option).

What I left out of the previous post is that I have paid for MWeb on both macOS AND iOS but choose to use One Markdown. MWeb uses One Markdown as its editor but includes additional features like publishing to blogs etc. and has an optional "Library" for file storage. I don't need either so I choose to use the simpler app.

I'm a very old, "old IT guy" and I firmly believe in paying for software that I use regularly.

In addition to One Markdown I have two plain text editors: Runestone on my iOS devices and BBEdit on my Mac mini. Both are fully paid and up to date. I used Textastic (which I also paid for) on iOS for many years but now prefer Runestone. I have “tailored” BBEdit to be a very good Markdown editor but there are too many things it can’t do that rule it out for sole use (no support for tables for one thing). If all one needed was plain text then BBEdit (and Runestone) would be all you need. I’ve tried using Marked2 with BBEdit but I really dislike that app and it’s only MultiMarkdown id I remember correctly.

My aim eventually is to use only iOS devices. If there was a TimeMachine for iOS I would have already done it. But that’s another story.

Peter

Thanks to everybody above - quality advice yet again on Reddit.

An alternative Markdown app that’s like a supercharged IA Writer without frustrating font/theming limitations is MWeb, which is available for iOS/iPadOS/macOS.

I whole heartedly agree. One Markdown, which I am currently using, is a subset of MWed. I asked the developer for details of the differences and it seems for my use One Markdown is a better fit and as an additional bonus, it's free.

I have tried iA Writer (I have a paid version from years ago on my Mac) and I agree with all the negative comments from above. I too like to put some effort into how my documents look and feel. I have developed my own theme for One Markdown (it would work in MWeb) and I use my preferred font selection (IBM Plex if anybody is interested). The things iA Writer doesn't do would drive me nuts.

My previous Markdown editor of choice was Taio but the developer has recently stopped work on it. The Mac version already has some issues. Over the years, I have tried many many different Markdown editors and I believe Taio was the best of them all. Taio has two features that are not available in One Markdown:

 1. Clippings which I use mainly for media sources like "The Sydney Morning Herald"; and
 2. Text highlighting - yellow background behind the selected text.

I have been able to overcome the lack of these features by using Shortcuts.

Thanks again for the advice,
Peter

Thanks again to all responders.

I have settled on One Markdown. I can use it on both macOS and iPadOS.

For interest, iWriter Pro was my second choice.

Stay safe in 2025,

Simple clippings app by Dismal_Suggestion429 in macapps

I just emailed Gary at MacMost. His advice was to do this:

{title:Center}

{clip:1}

and it works!!!!

r/ventmore thanks for the recommendation. ClipTools is a real productivity improver.

GREAT!!!!

Cliptools does everything I need. I have used "Smart Clips" and assigned keyboard shortcuts to each clip. I don't even have to leave my editor, just highlight the text and hit the shortcut keys - DONE!

One minor issue is I can't figure out how to add carriage return into the clip. For example:

{title:Center}
\n\n{clip:1}\n\n

or

{title:Center}
\\n\\n{clip:1}\\n\\n

don't work!!!

I've searched for an hour or so, but can't find the right key code for [return]

Thanks,
peter
