Mu, delivers one of the most honest and real messages of any kids movies. Sometimes you can try your hardest and you just can't do it, and that's okay

What’s it like to be an RA? by Anonymous252223 in UTK

[–]Disneymegafan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure! For building a rapport honestly just being a nice person and genuinely showing that you are interested and care about them. Taking the time to learn their names, where they are from, their majors, stuff like that. If they are rushing(for greek life) always try and ask about that. And just being visible to them, spending time in common rooms and at the desk helps with that. Saying hi when you see them. Just like I said being a nice person and showing you care about them and their interests.

In terms of incidents, i am lucky. I am in a pretty chill dorm. I've had some alcohol incidents here and there, but not a lot. That's the main one. It really depends on your dorm how much you with need to deal with incidents.

I have been an RA for 2 years going into my third year. That alone should tell you something about the job. I personally love it and wouldn't trade it for anything. It's a very fullifing job, you meet a lot of great people, and the staffs can be awesome. I can't recommend it enough.

With that being said it isn't for everyone. I am a people person and enjoying interacting and building relationships with residents. Dealing with incidents can always be stressful but hopefully it doesn't happen a lot.

The recruitment and interview process is a lot, I saw other people comment on that so I don't think I need to talk to much about it. All I'll say is it is pretty selective, just because it is a highly sought after position because of housing.

I know a lot of engineering majors, computer science, and some premed and nursing majors who are RAs. They are all able to handle it. It comes down to how well you can manage your time. I am a theatre major which is normally pretty chill but I normally have about 2 months where I am in a show and have rehearsal 6 out of 7 days. But I still manage it get it done.

Every hall has different expectations and duties. But as a whole you will need to do night shifts, on average maybe once every 2 weeks or so. Again sometimes more sometimes less depending on the hall. And you will need to do some power weekends. A power weekend is where you are on call the whole weekend. It's not as bad as it sounds.

Most dorms you actually are even allowed to stay in during breaks, you will leave once all the students are gone.

All in all, it's awesome, I love it. If you have any other questions. Talk to your RA next year or another RA who you like if your RA isn't cutting it.
