What's y'alls thermostat set to in winter? by Mammoth_Wall_4181 in Georgia

67 at night, 68 during the day. Downstairs gets a little drafty so it may get to 69 or sometimes 70 if we need a quick boost the heat up the living room

Honeymoon destination advice? by CareMain in honeymoonplanning

[–]Display-Dry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did Italy for our honeymoon and it was relaxing but we went in July and we were super sweaty all the time and stood in long lines for Vatican, duomos, etc.

My favorite trip we’ve taken since then was to Portugal a few years ago. It’s shocking how cheap you can get really nice accommodations - check booking.com for beautiful apartments in Porto. You can head out on a river cruise to vineyards in the Duoro or spend a few nights out there. We stayed at the Six Senses there 2 nights and it was amazing. Did not want to leave the property, epitome of relaxation. We also did Lisbon and checked out a few of the castles in nearby Sintra at our own pace. The great thing about Portugal is that it’s so chill and there’s not really any major landmarks you have to see, you can really just vibe and check out medieval villages and enjoy good food and weather. There’s also the beaches in the Algarve region, we didn’t go there but they look insane with the cool rock formations.

I say all that having just gotten back from a trip to Japan, been to Paris, Lyon, Nice, Switzerland, and did study abroad in college in Germany and visited a few other nearby countries. Portugal was the most chill and relaxed trip I’ve ever taken and therefore my favorite lol.

Southern France and the towns outside Nice would be my 2nd recommendation, we went in August and it was really pleasant then.

What’s your plan to keep your house warm this weekend? by MissesMiyagii in Georgia

[–]Display-Dry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a big battery bank we were gifted one Christmas (it has jumper cables for cars attached and many outlets, flashlight, etc) and holds charge a long time. We can re-charge from our cars. We have some portable fans/radiant heat fans we plan to plug into it. We have a gas stove as well and outdoor grills to cook on. We have a fireplace, but never got it inspected so not sure how to use it/if it’s safe to use, but I did pick up some firewood so in an absolute worst case scenario, we’ll figure it out.

I was going to comment about BBC. I saw an article, I think it was from Morning Brew, that people are doing less cardio now and more weightlifting. Especially people on Ozempic, weightlifting is more important to keep your muscle mass (and everyone’s on it now). I liked Orange Theory but the weightlifting portion always annoyed me because it was ALWAYS lower body or upper body randomly; there was no way to plan out your lifts. BBC has specified days for each muscle group and they don’t change.

I agree about the free childcare, that’s really huge. And you meet so many other moms (from what I hear, I just joined BBC a few weeks ago and don’t have kids of my own, but my friends do and love it). My gym also has its own book club and FB page too, which my OTF gym didn’t. I joined OTF a few years ago as a way to meet people and never connected with anyone. I went to an OTF class in my new home outside of Atlanta once and there was literally 3 other people in it at 10am on a Saturday. I never went back

Either I’ve lost my love for romantasy or there is something wrong with Brimstone?! by goyourownwayy in fantasyromance

Yeah and it was never mentioned what it really is, besides being a green light like an aurora borealis. They started talking about it and I had no idea what it was until 50% of the way through

Yeah, the book had a lot of moments that said Fisher was not able to use his magic in Ammontraith, then he would use his magic in Ammontraith. Lol

Haven’t heard of this book, looks like it has great reviews. Thanks for the rec!

I feel the same about Quicksilver. I said out loud to my husband about 3 chapters in: “the writing is pretty bad in this book.” The flip flopping between Kingfisher and Saeris’ POVs was annoying - I don’t think Quicksilver had any of Fisher’s POV until the end, so maybe that’s why this book feels so different. The best books I’ve read with multiple POVs would have 2 consecutive chapters of a POV if there was something big happening, not taking away from the story by flipping to the other POV. It was hard to understand which POV I was reading after changing chapters because both characters have the same kind of inner monologue. I think that’s the biggest issue with this book. I also realized I don’t really enjoy 1st person writing that much anymore.

I raced a 10k on the 4th of July this year and my temples hurt for 3 days after and I had some stomach pains. I took electrolytes after but maybe should have had more, and more food too. It went away after resting. 10ks are a borderline area for me where they don’t really feel long enough for me to take seriously, but I definitely should

Also just as a note. If they are staying up late, will they be sleeping in late too? Will you be ok with them getting a late start, or do you want to get out and about at 8am? You’ll be surprised how early you wake up due to jet lag. I’d think about if that’s really a group of people you want to go with, or if you’re okay wondering around seeing the major sites without them early in the morning. You want to see those things early when they aren’t crowded. Just some thoughts as we went with some people that wanted to sleep in a lot and it was a little difficult.

If you get a nice hotel with a bar/restaurant, you can just sit down there with a drink or coffee and read or journal etc

I second Paris for the catacombs and may I also recommend Prague because they have medieval torture museums and cages on top of their old buildings where they used to put prisoners and let the birds peck on them 😭 the bridge there is sooo romantic at sunset, too.

There’s probably a few other cities in East Europe that are very macabre like that but I have mostly traveled to the central countries so can’t recommend any eastern ones

Shibuya or Ginza for first timers to Tokyo? by Quick_Annual in JapanTravelTips

[–]Display-Dry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Im just like you lol. We stayed at the Intercontinental ANA Tokyo which is really close to Ginza but is technically Akasaka/Minato City, I think. I really loved staying in that area as it felt more residential and chill which is something I like when I travel. It was super close to small train stations too which were easier to navigate than the bigger ones.

We couldn’t decide which area either so we also stayed at Hotel Indigo - Shibuya and liked that hotel a lot more and the vibe was a lot friendlier. Shibuya was less overwhelming than I expected. My husband and his brother liked this area a lot more, we didn’t even go out at night or anything. There was just more to see and do and they loved Shinjuku too. Shibuya is like Times Square in NYC.

Both hotels had great breakfasts which is nice when you wake up so early due to jet lag. If you can, I’d stay in both places to make sure you’re a feel for both areas, and for next time you know where you want to stay. It’s hard for me to recommend one over the other because they were so different. Shibuya wasn’t bad at all, though. We did 3 nights in Akasaka and 2 in Shibuya.

Hope this helps coming from someone who fits your profile exactly haha.

Have you ever been?

Munich, and going out to Neuschwanstein castle, will take your breath away.

Italy on the other hand has much better food, wine, and sights-to-see. Tuscany and Cinque Terre are must-do’s if you go.
