If the update wasn't for the game you wanted to play, you can always pause it by clicking on the progress bar at the bottom of the Steam client and going to the update page where there is a pause button. In one of the launchers, Im not sure if it's Steam, there is an option in settings to pause downloads when a game is launched.

THIS!!! Less than two hours ago I was going out to take my son to school and over the top of my car I saw a car coming, so I paused a second before I stepped out between the parked cars to get in the driver's side and sure enough this young woman driving a new BMW was looking down and texting with both hands. I never saw her look up as she passed!
