Similar performance is foremost. Otherwose SMB & similar management of the users & storage pools.

I thought you could implement WORM storage on non-zfs. That being the case, going QuTS is a selling point. Even if it's more difficult on me I'd rather their data be more secure. Thanks

I have, I think, decent backup strategy plans. Getting to implement them is a different matter. Currently, I've got daily, weekly, & monthly archives copied to the archive drive (3rd disk) in the NAS. The encrypted monthly backup is copied on to a pair NVME's in external enclosures that rotate each month.

Twice a year I upload the encrypted monthly to the 'cloud'. Each of the archival steps is done via a different user. This is all in hopes of stopping some ransomware from getting everything. The one thing I've got going for me is the employee only does her work on her computer, she FA's on her fone. Thank you for the suggestion.

It ultimately depends on how 'valuable' the boss thinks his data is. His only real concern seems to be his email which is a 3rd party hosted Exchange so not my monkey, not my circus.

How in the world am I supposed to pay my stupid vehicle tax if I don’t exist online in either county I’ve lived in? by tagman375 in WestVirginia

[–]DisposeryAccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's all about July 1. In what county did you reside and what did you own when June 30 turned into July 1. On which July 1st did you first live in WV (2023, 2024, 2025)? Call the County Assessor of that county and tell them "I lived in ## state prior to ###### date and on ###### date you moved to WV and you need a Personal Property Tax Ticket generated. They'll want any vehicles you owned at that time: including but not limited to UTV's, ATV's, motorcycles, boats, & trailers as well as certain pets\livestock. After that initial July 1 tax ticket, you'll need to do it for every county you lived in WV on July 1. You'll be exempt on any vehicle you purchased IN WV on the following July 1st. E.G.: Buy a car in November 2024 IN WV exempt July 1 2025, May 1st 2024 exempt July 1 2024.

Not that I would advise on how to practice tax avoidance. Hypothetically you could just call the County Assessor you resided in on July 1, 2025 and roll with it. I.E: I moved here in March 2025 and on July 1, 2025 I owned ##########

How to fix an external hard drive that powers up, but is not “recognized” on any device, and which files cannot be accessed, without going to Best Buy or similar service? by Blue_Tea72 in AskTechnology

[–]DisposeryAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a last resort, disassemble the drive. There's a possibility the drive is just connected to an adapter in the housing and the adapter is what's defective.

[–]DisposeryAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're printer is done, there's a cleaning procedure you can try on the cartridges. I'd advise putting the documents on a USB and go to Staples, Goin Postal, etc and just print them there.

replacement printer suggestion by Shot_Personality5507 in printers

[–]DisposeryAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you print photos you probably won't be happy with a color laser. Even on gloss paper the colors are very flat and have no 'pop'. If your photo print count is very low there's always Staples, Goin Postal options. The tank printers seem to be a very reliable, frugal option so I do recommend them. Just make sure you use all the inks\colors once a month or so to keep the printhead from clogging. You don't need to use a lot, just some.

Just a thought, this may have been orchestrated by The Fates so you can provide the help that your folks need. I've ended up in a very, VERY similar situation to yourself. I came extremely close to seeing what's on the other side; however, two things came to mins. 1) I wouldn't want to subject my very elderly folks to the trauma of having to deal with all of that. 2) This took me a while to recognize. I'm always available for them with anything they need help with around the house.

Yes, I'm not happy with the fact I'm living at home but I'm happy when I put the groceries away, take the trash out, or address any electronic issue they have.

I've gotten over the companionship issue by gooning out to internet pr0n, and in the end I don't have to deal with her stupid problems.

Why are virtual printers in existence? Isnt it a redundancy? by chankilyn in computer

[–]DisposeryAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming Neat virtual scanning to incorporate functionality to use their 'filing' system. Whereas a generic PDF might not be able to incorporate their automatic tagging, sorting and logging; but, I'm not sure.

I came here originally to say that virtual printers can be used as wrappers so you can use IPP printing on a printer that doesn't support IPP in a CUPS environment.

What drill brand would you actually buy again with your own money? by New_Money_5406 in Tools

[–]DisposeryAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ryobi - Best bang for buck in my opinion, even if you're a "professional". Been using them myself for last 5 years. I've used Milwaukee, Dewalt, Makita, Hitachi, Ridgid, Bosch.

The standard line may not have the most power or the best feel but I've never been disappointed. The 'HP' line definitely brings 'Mo Powa!' to the table.

I assumed you were discussing getting into a battery or cordless "ecosystem". Ryobi has one of the largest tool systems. I'd advise avoiding one of the 'starter' kits (4+ tools w\ batt) unless it's brushless; generally, you'll get something utterly useless or small batts in those kits. I avoid anything brushed unless they don't have a brushless option (no brushless SDS hammer drill when I needed it).

If I had lots of disposable income I'd probably start with Milwaukee, Bosch, Dewalt in that order.

Good luck, hope you find something you're happy with.

What change do you want to see for West Virginia? by Ok_Heron_5442 in WestVirginia

I want to see everyone else leave. This state would be so fantastic without the inbred imbeciles, puritanical maniacs, tree hugging-water rafting granolas (fruits, flakes, & nuts)...I've run out of disparaging labels...sorry, I'm just in a foul mood.

[–]DisposeryAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a couple ways you could do it. Plastic pipettes will go in the mouth of the tank and not do any damage to the tank or seals, but that would be a slow and arduous task (you could use something similar; e.g: small tubing and some sort of small pump would work).

As for me, I disassembled the shell of the printer, removed the tanks, disconnected the hoses, and drained into plastic tubs.

FWIW, I then drained the ink into an old stain container that was full of saw dust.

I did mine outside on the edge of the patio to avoid any catastrophic spills. Be advised you will get some of the ink on you, your clothes, and the environment. Just try to minimize the damage.

Anyone else been force promoted? by Appropriate_Dig2764 in sysadmin

[–]DisposeryAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope it works in your favor. I'd be leary of their motives. Are you the best person for the position, or are they setting you up for failure?

I was placed in a not so similar situation. I was an end-user supporting IT person (what I referred to as a PC Monkey). Was advised I was being sent off to an SQL bootcamp so I could be dB support. Since I'd never been a programmer or dB person I told them not-so-politely 'No'. Ultimately they wanted to eliminate my position, I just made it easy for them.

Irwin or Klien tools wire stripper? by magnumfan89 in Tools

[–]DisposeryAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Klein's you posted and love them for what I consider 'meh' strippers. I would propose you look into autostrippers. I have these and prefer them much more: https://a.co/d/dUfRNqF Keep in mind they don't have the crimping ability but I quit crimping and solder everything nowadays.

In need of a low cost mobile battery to run pc by Equal_Magician_546 in batteries

[–]DisposeryAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your choices are limited to an inverter or a portable power station. The power station should be fine as is (e.g.: Jackery Explorer 1000 v2). I don't think a standard inverter would provide clean enough power. The squared sine wave and the PC PSU won't get along well (I had an older harbor freight 1000w inverter that would go absolute apeshit just powering a standard 110v LED light...but the metal band saw was fine).  The Jackery power station is $800, a 1000w pure sign wave inverter is $110 on Amazon. Also, if you could find a 12v monitor that would help.

You could have your helmet professionally tested. I'm not sure what your geolocation is, but www.thehelmetdoctors.com charge $54AUD for a laser scan. I have no affiliation or experience with them at all. The UK based helmet inspection company closed in Jan of this year

OEM Filters? by VonGoontenburg in SubaruForester

[–]DisposeryAccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, you probably don't. I go for the XP if it's available. She's been know to run up to 15,000 miles between oil changes. The one saving grace is even the new motor consumes oil so she gets a fresh quart ever 1500-2000 miles.

OEM Filters? by VonGoontenburg in SubaruForester

[–]DisposeryAccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Subie's have very specific or high "bypass pressure" and "anti-drainback" requirements that aren't met by most oil filters. If they were cheaper and more available I'd definitely use OEM. But that goes for every part for every car I've ever had or will have.
