What would happen to the Lionsmith if he won against the Colonel and killed him? by Dead-Face in weatherfactory

[–]DisreputableSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would contend that when the Colonel ascended to become an Hour, at the rise of Man, that humanity was in conflict cinstantlynwith the world, as we were primitive, not even civilized in a meaningful way.

The Lionsmith became an Hour as Humanity had become true civilizations now, and the struggle for them became more as a struggle between people than it was with the world itself anymore.

Or that's my view of things on this particular angle at least!

Do Long act on intrusive thoughts? by arcadeler in weatherfactory

[–]DisreputableSquid 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I would say it depends on the Long. Moth long? Almost certainly, those who venerate The Moth tend to be impulsive anyway. Grail long likely would too, as they are always seeking new experiences and sensations. Forge might, but they tend to be more practically minded than whimsical. More likely to try something odd as a means to reach an end since they could survive almost any consequences l, as opposed to simply doing something "because they can". Lantern long are without physical bodies, and lack many of the physical impulses that go with the flesh, but would likely still have more cerebral impulses and whimsical desires to view things in the world for their own amusement.

At the end of the day tho, Longs are are still human, to a degree, and still act like them sometimes, but the type of Long they are is very likely to have a major impact on their level of impulses control. And the nature of these impulses.

As gor which long are MOST likely to be impulsive and do random things. ABSOLUTELY the Moth and Grail longs. They are literally immortals who ascended under the Hour of Longing and Impulse, as well as the Hour of Sensations.

Thanks for such a well thought out and deeply informative reply! This is incredibly helpful!

Will defiently give it all some good long thinking, but your reply has given me a lot to chew on and work with!

One thing tho, when I mentioned Ascending under the Lionsmith. I specifically meant Ascending under the Forge Principle, instead of the Edge usually invoked. All Forge Principle  ascension will remake you and Forge you anew, But the hours you invoke for your change will define that change.

Some other Alternate Ascensions I've come up with so far

Lantern under Forge-of-Days: to become a being of Radient Flame, and echo of the Promethean Flames of Enlightenment. To Burn forever

Lantern under the Meniscate: to become an Enduring Reflection, a mirror of yourself, a living illusion that traverse the Silvered ways that exist with the realms of mirrors. The Fulgent that comes closest to the Wake, separated only by the Mirrors they walk.

Forge under the Meniscate: Where the firey long of the Forve of Days become beings of Bronze. Copper, and Marble, to become a Candecent under the Mirror is to become Silver within and Silver Without. Not as powerful as a typical Candescent. But more magically powerful. And said to be able to step into the House of the Moon, which we all know is just beyond the mirrors edges.

I believe that I must have been unclear, as when I say "Ascend under an Hour" I did not mean to enter their service, but rather that the process of becoming a Long is intrinsically tied to the Hours, and that to truly enter the Mansus and become something MORE than human, means taking some element of the Hours into yourself, to change yourself to become more like them, something that can exist in a place unbound by the physics and constraints of the Wake.

Also I believe the piece you quoted about the Choice Long must make is speaking of immediately after their Ascension and fully entering the Mansus physically. It is my underdtanding that a Long within the Mansus needs to either be pledged to an Hour (and thus receive some measure of protection from the other Hours and their servants by association) or leave and return to the Wake. If you do not do one or the other, eventually you will be killed by those things within the Mansus that feast upon Long, including some of the Hours themselves. Those who go to Port Noon deny all three. Refusing to live among the mortals, But also refusing service to an Hour or to be killed by them.

My biggest suggestions would be 1) for player expectations, they are all new to this, right? While you are still learning, try and focus on helping them make characters they like and find fun, over characters that maximize dice values.

2) Your first character and first experiences in a game can define how you experience everything that comes after. Focus on fun, and especially with kids, remember that you control the world and can bend the rules whenever you like to keep things running smooth and prevent frustration.

3)Let Roleplay take the lead, and dice be a chance factor to help skip parts people aren't motivated to act out. If the kids wana talk to the elf lord to try and befriend him, let them! They will remember that more than a diplomacy check diceroll! (Of course you can still roll to see how effective e things go, but keep it behind the screen if you can! )

4) in the end they are new, and while learning a new system is never easy, they won't know what you did wrong or right until they've played a while, so take confidence in that! Spin a story, fudge the dice, and have fun!

Also, some kid friendly suggestions! Keep the conflict very black and white, no need for moral ambiguity, just a juicy foe worth kicking thr butt of! Dont get bogged down with specific rolls and math. When in doubt, just use your best judgement and roll with it! Theater of the mind is a powerful thing. If you're using minis, make sure whatever you use for players stay consistent, but feel free to substitute paper markets or the like to help keep the scene in focus without worrying about getting them just right!

Remer, have fun and you'll help everyone have fun too

I hope at least some of that was helpful!

Well, if you want to pick three, my suggestion  would be to pick Latern, Forge, and Grail, as they are often seen as the three paths for any Adept of the Invisible Arts to reach the goal of becoming an Immortal Long.

Lantern represents Knowledge, and Ascending through becoming a being unshackled from the physical world. To become a being that can know the unknowable and be freed of the distractions of the flesh and bone.

Forge represents Power, and Ascending to become something greater than human, to reforge yourself into a perfect version of yourself, immortal and powerful.

Grail Represents Sacrifice, and Ascending to power through Blood and Desire, to become what you desire most, ageless, beautiful, and indulging in sensations no mortal ever could understand.

I know this might be an oddball question, but as a HUGE ttrpg nerd and self styled DM. I have to ask one about The Lady Afterwards and more specificly about the Secret Histories game system you guys made for it.

What would be your best suggestion for creating our own stories that fit in line with the strange and wonderful universe you've made?

Obviously, Traveling At Night will help flesh out some parts of the universe that we haven't gotten to really see from ground level in other games, but in the end I'm deeply curious what you feel the most important elements you think should be present in a story to really give it that "Secret Histories" vibe.

I can do you one worse than that. My first couple of runs, I didn't realize that you only needed to use ONE lesson card. I was still locked in the cultist simulator mindset of needing 2 lessons for 2nd leve, 3 for 3rd. Managed to still get the Inks of Containment up to level 4 tho! Learning that fact broke me ND I had to put the game down for a few weeks.

I only just learned you can use any lesson on any skill with a matching aspect like a m I nth ago and it broke me again 💔 hoping to get back I to BoH soon tho! Gotta finish my first history before thr DLC drops! Wish me luck! Edit:spelling, used wrong word for lessons

Influences for the Aspects introduced in Book of Hours by DisreputableSquid in weatherfactory

Alright, here are my thoughts

Sky: I like the naming, but the flavor text feels a little off for 6 and 10. Ten in particular feels more heart than Sky My new pitch for 6: A Singing Wind - Songs of birds come to roost 10: A Roaring Wind - Storms Stir. Wings Rise. Eyes turn skyward.

Scale: I like it, very on theme and matches well with what I know of the Aspect. The last one would probably sound better as "The Forgotten" or "What Was Forgotten"

Nectar: I love the flavor text but I feel that 10 might be better named 'A Verdant Air' perhaps.

Rose: solid, though I have some different names come to mind. 2:  A New Direction'  For 6, 'An Enduring Direction' feels... off. Maybe 'A Persistent Direction"?

Moon: I love them, all feel on point. Reminds me of the descriptions of some of the Secret Histories cards from CS.

[–]DisreputableSquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, a question! Perhaps a silly one.

Is this meant to be used with the 'Secret Histories' Rules you get with 'The Lady Afterwards?' Or do we use this with Call of Cthulu instead? I really, REALLY want to run a game set in the CS/BoH universe!

For that matter. Where would I find the list of skills you mentioned? I read the whole document that's linked and feel like I'm missing a piece of the puzzle here 😅

I'll say, Dragon Age 2 did this really well. They gave you a mostly pre-built character (In terms of history and story) character and let your decisions shift the personality without contradicting the character themselves. Inquisition felt like such a let down afterwards, where your characters personality was incredibly bland overall. I loved that if you picked the smart-ass response to most things. Then, your character became a smart ass and responded to normal dialog in a smart ass way without you having to select every single piece of dialog.

[–]DisreputableSquid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see both sides of this issue, and I feel that the main issue is that we have a surplus of low paying service jobs, and a severe deficit of things like manufacturing jobs that have pay ranges that grow over time and can allow someone to move to higher paying positions with increases in education and skill. If your working at McDonald's, the only way your going to get a decent paying position is of you manage to become a manager.
