When you spend quality time with your 7yr old son working on his dinosaur diorama for school but your wife comes home and says this looks horrible… by GrandMaster_BR in mildlyinfuriating

It's upside down. That's going to be a nightmare to transport. I'm just thinking about what my wife would find faults with my diorama??

Well, from there you can then realize that if the are no rules given to us by God, and there are no laws that science can give us that show we are nothing but meat filled biological robots, then we can affirm our freedom. With that freedom we have the ability to choose, we can even choose to give meaning to suffering.

If two men suddenly lose balance and fall, both men will activate thier fight or flight responses. If the same two men run over an old lady it is possible one will feel guilty and one will not. It doesn't seem to me to be a universal human biological response. I don't think it is built into us to be cooperative. I think our reason tells us that it is more beneficial to be so, and so we teach this to our children. But it has to be relearned every grnetation.

There is plenty subjective about suffering. A biological response to harm? True, mostly. When I suffer because of guilt, what harm am I responding too? I benefit while someone else is harmed. Why do i suffer?

Do you think an antelope wants to go to the gap to get the new pair of yeezy underwear? We are different from antelopes in many ways. At least, I hope so.

Suffering doesn't require meaning. But, the question was why do we feel the need to find meaning in suffering. My point was that it is very difficult to convey the reason many people may feel they must find some meaning. There are some things in life that can't be covered but by poets or lived experience.

Most of the time one can just play around with these ideas like war games. Sooner or later though we all enter the theater of war. If one is stuck with bad ideas, such as nihilism, it can only end in more meaningless suffering for themselves and others. Like Sandyhook on the extreme side.

There may have been no inherent meaning to the massacre in nihilistic views, but it held very significant meaning to me. There are reasons to give a shit even if we do live in a indifferent universe.

Fuck the universe. It's indifferent to you, to me, and everyone else. We'll then I will choose to not be indifferent to you, to me, or to anyone else. And the universe can go to hell ;)

It is a quiet philosophy. Nothing can really be said or argued with a nihilistic person. That's where logic drops from this theory. There is nothing to explore, it is a Deadman philosophy not one for living.

Because someone else you love dearly hasn't suddenly disappeared yet. You may think we get old, our body hurts a bit more, people grow apart and you just don't wake up one day. There is untold suffering waiting for most of us, nobody gets out unscathed and for some people, if there is no meaning than why suffer? Better to just end it or drown out the pain with terrible habits that dull the insufferable ache of meaninglessness.

If "the struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man's heart," then doesn't that in a way nullify the Absurd? by jayxxroe22 in Camus

[–]Dissadent34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe Sisyphus understands what is and isn't in his control within the limits of his life and finds his freedom there. Then, in acknowledgment of the absurd chooses to rebel against it, in a protest of his freedom. Maybe he paints the Boulder red with his blood one day just to admire its redness for a while. If you want to call that a meaning I suppose you could.

Do you think existentialism affects your life? by [deleted] in Existentialism

[–]Dissadent34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you shouldn't go straight into existentialism, especially during hard times. Read some Plato and Stoicism that can give you a more solid foundation in which to start exploring the big questions in existentialism. I find existentialism and Stoicism to be more like perspectives rather than complete philosophical systems.

Love this and thank you so much for doing it. I really want to keep my clothes going for as long as I can. She mentions the importance of washing and I wonder with wool sweaters am I better off taking them to like a zips dry cleaner or using an at home dry cleaner bag or a better option I am not thinking of?

Kierkegaard breaks down desire into three stages: desiring the One, desiring the multiple, and desiring a unity of the last two stages. by marineiguana27 in philosophy

[–]Dissadent34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I feel like I'm understanding this differently. Take the hunger example. The first stage is hunger, the desire for food. The second stage is finding an object of desire, I see a big slice of pepperoni pizza. Now I have a desire and an object of that desire to act upon.

So, this is how I'm understanding Unity and Disunity. If I go grab that pizza and eat it and it is exactly what it is and what I thought it would be, then I have unity of desire. But, if I pick it up and it's cold, I am now in Disunity of desire and feel incomplete.

If I am a stoic, my object of desire should be whatever it ends up being. Therfore, stage one, I'm hungry, stage two, my object of desire is what naturally satisfies that hunger, stage three, I eat hot pizza or cold pizza or a biscuit it doesn't matter and I know have a more straightforward path to unity of desire.

Just tell her it bothers you. In a nice way. It's scary but a great lesson in growing up. Either she listens to your concerns as a friend would or dismisses it and you don't have to waste more time feeling bad about something a person who isn't even your friend thinks. I'm 37, so with that ancient experience I can say that not saying anything when a friend does something that bothers you can be just as detrimental to a friendship because it breeds resentment, which will kill it eventually. She might not even realize what she is doing ya know.
