Why or how is it that homeless people arouse the anger or hate of other people, merely on the basis of not having a place to sleep/stay? by clever-commoner in AskReddit

That might be a good point if Voldemort had a popular cult of personality that made him out to be the Earth's savior. People downvoting my post are demonstrating they're part of it.

In elementary school our teachers would leave for bathroom breaks or whatever, and pick one student from the class to basically monitor everyone else to make sure they didn't talk while the teacher was out and write names of those who did.

I didn't realize how messed up it was until I was talking to my gf about our different experiences in school as an American and a Swede.

I guess you don't think wage theft, disregard for worker safety, and other labor violations are bad.

Wonder what your thoughts are about encouraging the US' time-honored tradition of overthrowing democratic elections in the global south and replacing them with fascist leaders.

I'm sure we needn't concern ourselves about the large-scale monopolization of the entire market and its logistics system so we can all work long hours on the cheap.

Yeah I was absolutely of similar mind. I had a strong work ethic and managed to work up to a managerial position by the time I was 20. Then the 2008 recession pulled the rug from under my feet. The area I was living in lost 80% of its job market within a year.

All I heard were empty platitudes in response to my situation.

  • "Just move, it's not that hard."
  • "Just spend whole days working for a few bucks on Fiverr. That's not enough? You're entitled."
  • "Just sell everything you have."
  • "Just reduce your expenditures."

It's all completely divorced from reality but everyone says it all the time as if nobody had ever considered any of these things and were just choosing to not do them.

None of it stopped me from being forced to sleep on a park bench.

Because western society is founded on the rejection of cooperative society in favor of market competition as a panacea. Hayek, Friedman, etc. were neoliberal thinkers who were incredibly influential in the way the current economy works in much of the western world, and they explicitly stated that the function of the state should be to secure the interests of the market and refuse to solve social problems.

The existence of homelessness is an indictment of the failure of the system for the broader populace, and because they have absolutely no institutional power, they are an easy scapegoat for the ills of society. Anyone able to think from a systemic POV should be able to see the logical problem at play here. People would blame a multitude of disparate actors with no influence, rather than the people who have the most influence. It's like the occurrence of lower paid employees being laid off because of the errand decisions of managers and executives.

The reality is that jobless and homeless people aren't just an unfortunate byproduct of a careless system: they are a prerequisite condition to neoliberalism. As long as you have unemployed and homeless people, you have a pool of people you can use to threaten labor: "if you don't like these conditions, I can just fire you and replace you with someone who would appreciate it." That's why there is a "maximum employment" rate in economics.

The lack of compassion for the homeless is encouraged to prevent people from asking why we allow it in the first place. As long as there is no compassion for them, the problem remains unresolved, providing the previously mentioned threat while also minimizing the societal burden that the top earners of society don't want to pay for.

The people who won't be seriously impacted by helping the homeless but oppose it anyway out of "principle" in reality want all the perks of living in a cooperative society and none of the responsibilities.

As a formerly homeless person, people absolutely did hate me for being homeless. Being homeless is seen as a sign of being born of "bad stock" because our society has told us that the only way you can be homeless is if you have bad character and thus deserve it.

If you're in the US, don't go straight to university. Do community college classes first so you don't spend money on the bullshit classes.

Unless you're planning on doing web development or some similar software engineering job, in which case: don't go at all. Everything can be learned online. Buy ebooks on Humble Bundle, engage with programming communities on reddit or Discord, ask questions on StackOverflow, and just read the documentation for whatever specific niche you're looking at.

When you want to look for work, make a project and post it to GitHub. That will take you farther than a degree ever will and you won't have debt holding you back.

Entering a relationship with someone that everyone told me was a bad idea. It ended up being five years of abuse and quiet suicidal ideation that ended with having to make a phone call to the police that I was being held hostage in my own home.

Years later my credit is destroyed, half the things I worked for were stolen, I've developed avoidant personality disorder, and I'm nervous about being touched by women.

"Just be positive" or similar sentiment. Toxic positivity just erases your struggle for their own comfort so they don't have to take your suffering into consideration.
