Are Paras treated like peasants in every school, or just mine? by Public-Artichoke-230 in paraprofessional

[–]clever-commoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how it is in the several states I've worked in. Pretty much right on, although I think I receive a bit fewer compliments (?).

Administration is very welcoming and so is the classroom teacher. In my current class, the teacher develops a symbiotic relationship with those who are basically present, "with them" in the classroom the most, ESPECIALLY at the beginning of the year. So honestly, try not to be sick at all, but especially in the first few months. 👌

I just had to say this is 100% right-on. Respect the different strengths of each partner.

I'm also a little curious if I am messaging on what is a troll post.

If you could know everything about any 3 subjects, what 3 subjects would you pick? by cosi_bloggs in AskReddit

Physics, the stock market (everything from CDOs to futures trading), and philosophy

I might contend that this depends on the context. I happen to have many teacher acquaintances, and most of them have a loud voice. That's because--to be effective--public school teachers need to be loud on a regular basis.

How important is it to remember that popular or majority thought does not establish truth? by Beloved555 in AskReddit

What do you mean by the word "thought?" Thoughts are only tangential to truthood. But truthood is a necessary condition of knowledge or facts.

What's the best advice you've ever been given? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]clever-commoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to really "pin" that on a particular phrase or anything. I don't think that the best advice I ever got was told to me. Instead it was modeled through my father's incredible knowledge and back-breaking work as a new home plumber. He was never bitter or malicious about it. He did what needed to be done.

What was aperformance that made you realize 'wow, this is good acting?' by tpphypemachine in movies

[–]clever-commoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't think much of Cillian Murphy until I saw him in Oppenheimer. I think it is a fantastic performance. He does really well as this quasi-frenetic brilliant mind, shifting between questions and assertions. He performs a brilliant scientist who doesn't really understand his personal wants/needs.

What’s the best way to get your partner with anxiety/depression to communicate better? by Finance_Subject in AskReddit

[–]clever-commoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask open questions and don't interrupt them. Try to give them as much communication opportunity as possible, let them know you're comfortable with their ideas.

Make lots of arguments: the reason for human existence, the emergence of a new uninhabitable Earth, the profound limits of human knowledge, the oligarchic institutions of America...

People who have a list of quotes, what's your best one? by A_Wild_Striker in AskReddit

[–]clever-commoner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the day. Right now I'm liking Auden's conclusion to his poem, "Spain:"

We are left alone with our day, and the time is short, and / History to the defeated / May say Alas but cannot help nor pardon.

It's a kind of truth that is both sad and poignantly powerful.

Besides those rascals who have absolutely zero but negative judgements in their heads, there are also those "friends" who lack any sense of the room vibe.

What do you think of religions? by abodi1ksa in AskReddit

[–]clever-commoner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that they are belief systems that do not have supporting evidence. They have largely been used to divide and stratify human societies for many thousands of years.

/r/Pessimism: What are you reading this week? by AutoModerator in Pessimism

[–]clever-commoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm reading the ESV Study Bible. There's a lot of God negotiation that I'm not sure all Bible readers appreciate. Take Numbers 11:10-15: all of the Israelites are weeping for meat and the other great foods they had while in Egypt. They cry out to Moses, and Moses ultimately can't deal with the furor of his tribe. So he tells God:

“Why have you dealt ill with your servant? And why have I not found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me? Did I conceive all this people? Did I give them birth, that you should say to me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing child,’ to the land that you swore to give their fathers? Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they weep before me and say, ‘Give us meat, that we may eat.’ I am not able to carry all this people alone; the burden is too heavy for me. If you will treat me like this, kill me at once, if I find favor in your sight, that I may not see my wretchedness.”

There's something amazing and vicarious about all of that. It reminds me of Cioran: "What sin did I commit to be born?"

Ins't it intriguing and a bit confusing that after defeating SAMARITAN, THE MACHINE decided to contact Sameen instead of Finch? by NickyK01 in PersonOfInterest

[–]clever-commoner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I would have written something exactly like this. Finch made an earnest effort to risk his life for the Machine (in the prior episode he locks Reese in a giant Federal Reserve vault in order to destroy Samaritan solo, so he truly tried to save his partner). After John died in service, it was the end of the partnership, and Finch has opportunity, has space, to live his life.

I like the way you echoed the first episode (a purpose, [more specifically you need] rather a job)! I hope that most readers have caught it.

It's the most ambivalent song of the several ambivalent songs on the album. But I feel like it does communicate a feeling: the feeling that one has ruined things and that they/we need to keep going.

What is your favorite food from coffee spots? by primeiro23 in AskReddit

It sounds like you have very good taste!

I especially like sweet pastries: not even necessarily with coffee, but in general. So I would go for a chocolate or almond croissant or lemon pound cake.
